This is an extract from a letter that my father sent to his mother after the birth of his new baby and shows how different it was for young mums then.
Dear Mum
I expect George brought the good news over to you this morning: both E and the baby daughter are going on very well and E is very proud. She tells me to tell M 'She's done it for her at last' so the run of boys is finished at last.
E is very keen to see you both so she can show you the girl and brag about it, but nurse says she mustn't have any visitors for about five to seven days. I thought I'd get George to tell you this in case you decided to come down today, but I hope you'll be able to pop down next weekend and see us. Perhaps M would like to come here one evening in the week as well, I don't suppose any harm would be done if she cares to: on her way home from work.
The baby has been very good (so far) no yells or anything she just lies placidly in her cot and blows bubbles.
She was born at 10 past two on Sunday morning and it was a jolly good job I went home Friday as I was up at 3 that morning and didn't go to bed again till 4 Sunday morning.
Well I must close now as I'm going to write to dad and there are plenty of other letters to send also.
Lots of love from
E C and JJES (great secret)
