The Smiths on Peel

kidwhosavedyourlife's memory of 18th May 1983

"Ah - the distant cry of the herring gull" was how Peel described Morrissey's voice after 'What Difference Does it Make'. It was the greatest Peel session I'd ever heard in my life and Peel's random discription of Morrissey's whining at the end has stuck with me ever since. I don't think I've ever played a cassette as much as I played that and when my C90 eventually snapped Morrissey's dad was good enough to give me a copy of his.

I went to see them several times after that and won tickets to see them play in Derby for the OGWT on Janice Long's show in December 1983. In six months they went from Peel Session to BBC 2 Special.
