Shopping for 21tst Birthday Party

jayhazelwood's memory of 1 day between 5th November 1946 and 9th November 1946

My 21st birthday was in Novenber 1946. One came of age at 21 in those days. So soon after the war, alcoholic drinks were still in short supply. I had to queue for some time at Grimley Hughes in Cornmarket Street, Oxford (the well-known grocery and wine store).
As we were only allowed one bottle of any wine or spirit I could not just buy a case of wine as one can today.
I therefore bought one bottle of red wine, one of white, a bottle of sherry and one of port and one of whiskey and one of brandy etc.
This meant it was a rather jolly party because most of my undergraduate friends were not used to mixing their drinks.
