A good way to earn a bit of money

Arthur's memory of 1st January 1937 - 31st December 1939

When I was a boy, I remember making ice cream for Mrs Benefer. She was the lady who kept the sweetshop on the corner of North Street and she made her own ice cream. It involved making some sort of mixture, putting it in a can with some ice and then turning it for about an hour. She used to pay me six-pence for turning this handle – it was a hard way to earn six-pence, but it got you into the pictures in those days, so it was a good way to earn a bit of money. I went as often as she asked me to because there was no other money about in those days. It sounds ridiculous now – 2 ½ pence is what it equates to, but that opened a lot of doors in those days.
