Snow1958

poppyEleanorm's memory of 27th February 1958

After looking at pictures of the snow in leeds 2008. it has reminded me of the night we left Leeds for Glasgow. It was Febuary 27th and we were preparing to emmigrate. The snow started around four o clock pm. We had been in Leeds to spend the last of our English money and had decided to walk home. by the time we reached Sheepscar the snow was 2" deep. we were to leave Leeds about 2am in the morning. we had to walk down the the street to get into the taxi. Fortunately I had booked a sleeper on the train and we were able to sleep. People coming from further south were over 24hrs late. At times they had to leave the train and walk across snow fields to ask for food and milk for their children. Shipping was slowed down to 6knots. At the time it was the worst snow for a very long time. as you can see it is exactly 50 yrs ago. poppy eleanorm
