Memories of the Cumbrian Lamb Bank

BBC Memoryshare Cumbria on behalf of Graham Jackson's memory of 1st March 1960 - 31st March 1960

In March 1960 I came to Wennington in North Lancs to work for Jim Cook known throughout the area as 'The Pet Lamb King'.For about six weeks every spring Jim would scour the countryside for 'spares' and bring them back to Greenfold Farm where they would be bottle fed until bought by farmers to be mothered onto a ewe whose lamb had died.Jim had been doing this service to farmers for years and in the time I worked for him I saw hundreds of 'Pet Lambs'.Some lambs would never see the farm as Jim would call into local auction marts..Lancaster,Kendal, Bentham,Helifield,Hawes, and sell all he had and have to hit the road and find more!Originally from Eccles, Manchester I was working for Jim on The Agricultural Apprenticeship Scheme and spent three and a half years there.I worked on a variety of farms in the Bentham,Settle areas before coming to Canada and your article brought back many happy memories of a time spent in one of the most friendly and scenic parts of England!
