I remeber as a child visiting "Kaye's" department store in Huddersfield, a sort of throw back to "are you being served" and long before the days of the King Street Shopping Centre and Beatties!
It as i remember had a really old fashioned lift with gold coloured gates and a bell to tell you when you arrived at your floor. I am not certain but i seem to remember someone actually being in the lift operating it.
The "toy" floor always was my main interest as it would always be for any child. But as i think back it was Huddersfield's main department store it had this sort of wonderful character about it - lost in todays stores.
I now live in Christchurch, New Zealand and as a sort of reminance of the past "ballantynes" seem to capture a tiny part of the essence that once was Kaye's of Huddersfield
