My Grandfather was posted missing at Vimy Ridge during this battle. His memorial can be seen here;
www.cwgc.org/search/...He left a widow and a young son and daughter (my mum) aged 4 and 5. As soon as their landlord discovered that the family breadwinner was gone he evicted the family. This was before the phrase "land fit for heros" was coined. As we now know from previous and current conflicts, that phrase was and is a complete misnomer. This land is fit for precious little in that respect.
Anyway, my grandmother and her little family were taken in by other members of the family until they were back on their feet. I'm pleased to say that my grandma lived until 1989 when she was 103 years old. She never remarried - said she never met anyone worth giving up the war pension for. So she was a war widow for 72 years during which she raised her family, bought her own home in which she lived independently until she was 96. They made 'em tough in those days. As the recent TV series title stated: We don't know we're born.
