Are you in favour of Radio 4's controller, Mark Damazer axing the UK Theme from the radio 4 schedule?

No NO NO NO NO NO No No.

Give us our tune! A cup of tea and "Early one morning medley" is the best start to the day.

Scrap that and I scrap Radio 4 - you have been warned!!!!!!!

As this is the "Host" post I will put it here too:

Scrap the controller as he is certainly not relevant to listeners (and does not appear to understand them)

Definitely NO!!!!!! Lovely way to wake up in the morning listening to this, and must give the announcers time for a quick cuppa instead of saying what we are going to hear on the Today programme anyway.

Good to see our hosts on top of their game keeping up with, and reading the board! laugh

Rather explains the controller's attitude!

I don't understand why we need MORE news. Radio Four already broadcasts the half hour news bulletin from the BBC World Service at 5am, this is followed by a summary on Radio 4 at 5.35am. Radio Five Live has an hour of news and business from 5-6am, and with BBC World Service now available on digital radio, most people can listen to non-stop news on the World Service from 5-8am.

Radio 4 has certain "icon" programmes; The Archers, Desert Island Discs,I'm sorry I haven't a Clue, The Today Programme ( of course), and certain themes, Sailing By and The UK Theme. Touch them at your peril! If the Controller has not realised this, may he not be happier working elsewhere?

I suppose they'll replace the theme tune with some plinky-plonky monstrosity to 'reflect multi-cultural Britain'

I would imagine that a change to the format at that time in the morning will not make one iota of difference to the audience figures. (How many new listeners will get up earlier to hear the whizzy new news dollop, or ditch their Radio 2 or commercial station for it?)

If that is so, then it should only be changed at the request of the current listeners. If they like the tune it should be kept. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I think the controller ought to be VERY certain that he can attract a younger audience before he alienates his existing audience.

He says people dont listen to Today...well let them buy a portable radio and some earphones (if they are on the train) or tune in in the car (if there).

Early morning is a time for gentle waking up not "WAKE UP TO NASTYNESS!!!!" news. We have more news than ever in history, so leave this 5 minutes alone for some of us to wake gently to.

Grrrrrr

Too hideously traditional for our beloved multi-culti BBC, I expect.

One way or another they are managing to alienate just about every former BBC enthusiast, whether they are on these boards, or simply fans of Radio 4.

I have two emotions when I wake every morning to the UK theme. The first is pride in our country and our heritage. The second is the dread of the day when it could be expunged from our life by the invasion of a dictator. I thought it was only the likes of Hitler that could do that, not a mere Radio 4 controller. Is there no one out there who can do anything about that man? I notice he does not dare have a phone vote on it.

For the life of me I cannot understand the burning need to do away with this. Few people hear it, but for those on the way to work perhaps in the early morning, it is just one of those vital private moments that still manage to make Radio 4 a listening pleasure rather than a naggingly insistent reminder of daily political misery and oppression. What on earth is wrong with that???????????

Definitely not in favour of this. The work is wonderful and highly evocative of an elusive historical quality that defines a general essence of Britain. It's comfortably British - very nice to wake up to.

But if it's time to be dumbed down...

What about it, Celia - and news from the Controller's Office (or has he not deigned to show up yet?)

Celia: For purging us off that ghastly racket first thing in the morning, the controller deserves an award. After all if aging songster Mr Tom Jones becomes a "Sir", Mr Damziger coula actually be rewarded for services to music for ridding us of this awful concoction.
