How else to describe England's epic Ashes clash with Australia?

Follow the plot of a classic sporting drama as the hosts came from behind to claim two tense wins and go from unfancied long shots to favourites on the brink of history.

Do you agree that this is the greatest series in the history of Test cricket?

Just heard that Glamorgan don't think Simon Jones will be fit to play?

I would say it's the LATEST test series ever.

Finishing on September 12th ?!?!?!

On a serious note it has been utterly compelling from the first ball onwards. Each time one team has looked to gain an advantage they're pegged back by the other.

It's one of those series that you want to last forever, but can't wait for the climax.

Utterly compelling. The most dramatic in my lifetime, and I include '81 in that regard, where we also had 2 very close finishes and plenty of heroics.

This one pips it for me, though, as it's all been about teamwork and not just superheroics of one brilliant all rounder.

Well it's had everything. Incredible spirit, massive individual performances, some nasty fast bowling and the breaking of records left right and centre. Add in the close finishes and it's clear that this is a special series. But the best ever?
Yes.

To be the best from an England view point, we'd hammer them 5-0. To be the greatest series, it's exciting, tense, keenly fought, and this seems like it to me!

What records has it actually broken? Left - Closest Ashes test (Edgbaston). I can't think of any more, unless you count most tickets sold - Right. So what record is in the Centre?

Longest number of test innings that an Australian opener (Hayden) hasn't passed 70 - 30 innings.

First time in 18 years the Aussies have followed on, first time they've ever conceded 400+ in the first innings of 3 consecutive tests etc..

Didn't know about the 400 one, The follow on thing isn't really a record, an interesting fact(oid) certainly, but not a record as such.

greatest/ever is an oft misused adjective but i think that in this case it's an apt description --
botham's ashes can't be too far behind. also, ind-oz of 2001 must be snapping at the heels -- it loses out by virtue of having been a 3 match series.
but i've not watched the great series of the 60s and earlier. how do they compare?

When has a test series generated this much media attention or created this much interest in the general (non-cricketing) public?

I've friends who have done nothing but ridicule my love of cricket for the last 10 years. They are holding an Ashes party on Saturday.

Greatest? Ayuh!

If we're agreed this has been the greatest series, what's been the greatest moment?

Flintoff consoling Lee at Edbgaston, for me

Any thoughts???

I actually think the defining moment was on the first day of the first test when England had Australia 87 for 5. Althought Australia won the match, it was a defining moment as it showed England could compete, could do to the Aussies what they had been doing to us for years.
