I'd just like to say how impressed I am with the people on these boards. The wealth of cricket knowledge is amazing and it really shows that cricket followers around the world are just as, if not more, knowledgeable as the players both present and former.

For example today I have read the insightful humorous and highly educated discussion regarding Ashley Giles. I'm a cricket novice really I didn't realise that the nation was full of extraordinary spinners who would soon step into the 'chicken's', ha ha ha!, shoes. I'm amazed Graveny and company have persisted with this guy as well after all while England won match after match over the past year or so Giles erm sorry 'Chicken' could only take 44 wickets and contribute 482 runs and ten catches. Not only that his wickets which he did manage to fluke were only the piddly tail enders having a swing.
I mean look at them! some unknown guy called Lara three times another tailender called Chanderpaul 3 times and this guy must be a number 11 because the Chicken had him 4 times - Chris Gayle?! The loser could only return figures of 9/122 in one game blimey what a waste.

If only some of you guys were playing or better still let the young dynamic spinners I have heard so much about could play. Batty for example he bowled well against Bangladesh and previous to that he had THREE test wickets so he must be ready to match Warne? No? what about Keedy then he's been on TV and everything so all you with the knowledge of all things cricket could start a clamour for him.

Still better that that lets drop him and Bell don't worry that it's was the same people demanding Bell should play not Thorpe against the Aussies, after all Thorpe was only averaging 40 odd useless fool, and Bell had had his name in the paper for ages so we had to pick him. However Bell must go he's yesterdays news Collingwood scored some runs pick him quick and Ed Joyce he's English now don't you know. Come on Graveny and co listen to these people they know best.

Next week drop Harmison and Flintoff because they didn't both take a hat-trick

i just think Gilo should have taken a leaf out of Nasser Hussain's book and smash a few fridges rather than write a whiny, self-obsessed article where he comes across like a moaning old woman.

So then who do youy pick? What you marvel have you spotted while out on your scouting trips. You can all say Giles wouldn't get in most test sides I think even Giles would agree with that but who plays instead for England????

England is currently infected with a poor bunch of spinners, of which Giles, is by far the best.

If England really want a 'spinner' they should pick up, whoever that may be. If they want a neagtive, containing bowler pick Giles. Be sure that Gilo will get walloped all through the series though.

Should you pick a player just because you'd like someone of his style? (Schofield was the same, but was never given the same amount of time as Giles. Consequently his confidence was shattered.)

y not another out and out bowler? doesn't have to spin just because oz have one. tremlett? ali? collingwood -- not a serious longterm option but still better than giles.

I don't see the necessity for England to have a spinner, especially if we don't have a world class one.

A top class spin bowler has a place in every Test team and I really wish we had one but our climate and pitches don't encourage the art.

I hope now that Giles has been picked, that he takes some wickets and contributes well to the team. If he does - as I've said on another thread - I'll put my hand up and admit I was wrong.

We should play our very strongest team, against the Australians we can't afford passengers, and the batsmen have been leaning in that direction far too much, without selecting a bowling passenger too.

Fair point but who really thinks Collingwood wouldn't get sent round the park or Tremlett bowling straight up and down early 80 mph as for Ali well I wouldn't even go there. Giles isn't a Warne he isn't even a Kumble but he is the best we have and if we get to day 4 and it is an if surley giles bowling into the footmarks is better than having to throw it to Collingwood?

If we have to persist with Ashley Giles then for goodness sake have him bat at number 11 in the order as his batting is no better than his bowling. To see him bat in the first test was pitiful. Unlike the Aussies who got behind the ball and on numerous occasions got struck by it he kept on trying to get out of the way of it. This ended up in him losing his wicket to easily.
