Why now? Considering how abjectly the England side batted in the first test it is clear that we need more experience in there (probably in place of Bell).

Why Graham, Why?

oh well, disappointed.. was hoping to see him play a part in this Ashes.. but based on this morning, Pietersen should be there, and Bell will do well..

After this morning he knows KP will be picked as he looks well capable of taking the game to the Ozzies!!

Well lets say a big thank you to Thorpe & wish him luck!! biggrin

I suspect there is an element of "fine, get stuffed then" - and who can blame him?

Thorpe has sent a `dont come crawling back` meassage to those idiotic selectors.
Good on him.

no.

It's an ill timed announcement, this is no time for o-bitchery.

if you want to play for your country, you don't do it on your own terms, you do it on theirs. He didn't get picked. Tough s--t.

What did Brett Lee do after being reduced to team waiter? Worked on his game, and worked his way back into the side. Now he's better than before.

It's a team game, one reason Aus are so good is because they play liek a team. England too. There's no room for any other attitude.

If that is the case then its a pretty appalling attitude by Thorpe, throwing his toys out of the pram like that. Does he think he is bigger than the team?

Personally I hope he has done it because he feels that he won't get picked ever again and wants to officially finish his career himself with dignity, rather than him having done it out of spite.

very bad timing by Thorpe, reflects badly on him. Remember, he has a history of pulling out of tours etc. Many have shown a lot of patience with him in the past. Definitely a "get stuffed" move judging by the timing. Not a classy act..

Just after tea yesterday, when England stood at 21-5, I thought the selection of KP over Thorpe was looking pretty dodgy. What would we have given for one of Thorpes ground out innings? But I think KP has shown his mettle, batting safely when it was needed and letting leash today when he was running out of partners. Out with the old and in with the new!

It is an amazing thing that Hindsight... who is to say that Thorpe would have got any runs? It is Bell's first real "test" against high class fast bowling in a test match, he got an unplayable delivery, similar to all the other players, and people are calling for him being dropped. It is ludicrous... give the lad a chance.

Graham Thorpe should not have been overlooked. His record since returning to Test cricket has been excellent. I know he has had issues but you cannot ignore quality. At 21-5 I bet it went through Michael Vaughan's mind that Thorpe would be the man for this situation.

I don;t the Bell's delivery was that unplayable. The problem seemed to be he left a huge gate between bat and pad.

I have to say i think England are a weaker side without Thorpe. I'm not saying he should have replaced KP but Bell. The way Thorpe angles the ball for singles and alternates the strike can often take the pressure off in tense situations like yesterday.

How do you reconcile devoting time to family life and being on the other side of the world 6 months a year .. sounds like a politician who knows he is getting sacked!

Thorpe said his partner was having a baby in the next two weeks so he'd decided to concentrate on that. I'm disappointed in his decision, but can't criticise his reasons... Will miss watching him play though (and personally think he should have been selected ahead of Bell, but hopefully Bell will do ok in the next innings)..

He's been class since he came back at The Oval in 2003, averaging mid 50s and playing some amazing innings (Barbados was genius). Thanks for all the memories Thorpey and good luck for the future.
