I have never suffered any ill effects after surfing Aberavon but there is definitely something weird about the water quality there.
Nearly every time I surf there I have to get out of the water after an hour or so because my board has beome impossible to grip due to the brown gunk that is floating around. Does anyone know what this stuff is?
I'm not having a moan, I was just wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing. May be for capable sufers it's not an issue as they don't need the grip that someone of my very limited abilty needs.

Yeah I know what your talking about, that stuff seems to stick to your board when your coming out. Keeps the crowds down though

i used to surf there back in the 80`s & 90`s (before the recentish construction work there) & the water used to be thick with a black powder (coal dust) up to chest depth (if not more).it`s not suprising really if water quality int great as it`s a busy ish port with tankers fishing boats etc using the harbour entrance & harbour (as there must be quite a lot of diesel, petrol, oil etc) floating about on the water
not sure what brown gunk is tho

give the environment agency a ring and get them to go down and test the water quality. Number is at the top of the page. Lets be pro active here, people!

Walked the dog by the break on Sunday afternoon. It was all over the foreshore, and smelled like off cockles. Stuck to my boots lie industrial glue, and absolutely stank, to the point where i had to wash them in bleach. Thats why I dont surf there any more. Toxic Trestles !

had an email off the enviroment agency that backs my theory, they indeed confirm that messas wonker and son have taken site in the corus plant, and more disturbing than that was the shark making room, i27.photobucket.com/...

I have reported it over and over again. I smell a great big rat! EA always say its algal bloom caused by warmth and shallow water (we all kite the other end from the surf spot and its often horrific that end) I dont get how we get algal blooms in the winter. I did do some googling and came up with references to brown tides. Maybe its time to get an independent test done? I may be able to persuade the kite club to pay for that if someone can recommend someone to do it ?

I imagine the water is always pretty warm down there anyway? if its near Port Talbot then perhaps there is a lot of warm water coming from the industrial buildings...

good call kat, the "algae" could be forming on the outflow of corus/wonkers
