    Hi there,

Could anyone tell me why President Barack Obama got the Nobel peace prize?

I've been trying to figure it out but I haven't been able too. I've talked to mates, and teachers but they don't know either.

The Nobel Prize committee said he got the prize because he wants to take away all nuclear weapons and have peace in the world, nice thought, but then how come he won't destroy Americas nuclear weapons?

He might be a good president but I don't think he should have gotten the prize anyway, what do you think?

actually, obama himself didnt really know why he got the prize! he apparently 'changed the face of modern politics' by campaigning against guantanamo bay and nuclear weapons but, like you said, he hasn't actually done any of it yet. i don't think he should have got the prize either; there are plenty of other people who deserve it more than him.

I think personally it was just because people took it as a change in history the first african-american president. This means it symbolises peace among races.

He got the nobel peace prize because he has helped get rid of some of the racial tension in America.

They said that he had brought down the tension in the middle east but I disagree because even though he's withdrawing the troops from Iraq he still hasn't withdrawn troops from other middle eastern countries. The Nobel Prize Judges also said that he is trying to bring down racial tension but he hasn't accomplished it yet so practically he hasn't done anything at all except being the first black president.

    Hi,

I really think that he shouldn't have got the prize seeing as he refuses to get the troops out of Afghanistan, and he hasn't helped AT ALL with the economic downturn! But I have to say that he is a cool president!! xx

    Hello!

Barack Obama was (perhaps somewhat optimistically) awarded the Nobel Peace Prize not for what he had done, but to highlight a positive change in America.

First: the very fact that a man who was not white was elected to be President showed that Americans' voting decisions were no longer affected by the race of the candidate, but on his capabilities and message.

Second: Obama ordered the closing of Guantanamo Bay within his first week of office. This sent out the message that torture was no longer an acceptable form of interrogation.

And finally: the Nobel Peace Prize committee were offering the award in anticipation of what he would do. The abolition of nuclear weapons, healthcare reforms... while not, unfortunately, achieved, all seemed worthy reasons for him to receive the prize.

Obviously, Obama has now run into difficulties as President, and his popularity has fallen, but even his election was a first. It showed a drastic ethos change in America.* And that has to be a move towards world peace, if only a baby step in that general direction.

*No, I'm not suggesting that the whole of America should then automatically be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize smiley - smiley

In my opinion I think that Barack Obama should not have got that noble peace prize. I i am not wrong noble peace prize is when a president shows peace. well peace? he has not done any good he has made wars on country's that are totally innocent. he has made wars not peace!

    @Chocolatefan111

I noticed you said Obama hasn't helped with the economic downturn at all. This is a false statement.

When Obama became President he inherited all the problems George Bush left behind. Obama tried everything, he created thousands of jobs in the public sector and tried making cuts worth billions of dollars. He tried to improve the life of the American people and tried to introduce more policies that would help the poorer communities. However, the Republicans did all they could to stop Obama from helping the poor and they rejected a lot of his proposals. The Republicans have a policy called Laissez-faire which translates from french to english to mean 'leave alone' this policy effectively means that Republicans believed the federal government should not interfere with peoples' lives - leaving them either to prosper or to suffer, like the majority.

One last thing, Obama has said all his troops will be removed from Afghanistan by 2013, 2 years earlier then the UK.
