According to an article in BBC News Magazine, British people throw away more than a million unopened pots of yoghurt every day. You can find the article here:

What do you think about food wastage? Should we be doing more to stop it? What does your family do with left over food?

Itís something thatís been with me all my life. As a youngster I was always expected to clear everything on my plate and the sound of a knife scraping leftovers into the bin was quite unheard off. Kids these days it would seem are allowed to be picky with their food and I have seen so much perfectly edible food get thrown out. Perhaps our modern junk food mentality can be apportioned some of the blame though. Parents nowadays donít seem to mind that their children leave food behind.
With food we dont want we keep i in a compost bin, so it creats nutirents for the plants and it works :D

i think we should all go shoping with our parents and tell them what you like and don't like. But i must admit that i do waste food (i hope my mum doesn't read this lol)

We never waste food, we make the right amount for all of us every day and if, by chance, we leave some food we refigerate it and eat it for dinner the next day. I t does make me wonder how anybody could agree with food wastage, we say we are a green country then we throw away enough food to save many villages in Africa from starvation.

This seems to be a bit of an older debate but no less important.
Would it not be a better way of disposing of waste food to give it to the homeless?
All the food shops and even households could collect all the day's food that is otherwise to be put to waste and take it to a local centre at which the homeless can be fed and sheltered.

I feel it's wrong to leave leftovers,
Like I feel soo guilty to myself because there's starving people in africa plus people are dieing of starvation everysecond. So I should appreciate what I get. And my sisters think i'm weird though - because just say I had some ice-cream and i left a bit at the bottom / or chips etc , I say to them 'do you wanna finish it off' and they say 'eww gross , or no thanks' but they are family i have no germs! Its just that we waste alot of food every year in britain. I feel as if you should appreciate .

I wouldn't say that my family throws away too much, but sometimes we buy things, don't eat them and then we throw them away. However, we do NOT throw away yoghurt! The whole top shelf of our fridge is taken up by yoghurt- we get through about 30 per week between the four of us.
Anyway... I think its bad that we throw away so much! People in poor countries dream of what we take for granted.
