Hi, I'll post the essay I promised I would post, tomorrow!

However, could you please give me some tips on how to get 5/5 on the question on both passages as the highest I've ever scored is 2...

    Thanks!

Quite a few people have asked about the last question. You have a better chance of doing well with the new format, as it can be approached in a more organised and structured way if you follow the layout below.

In previous years, the last question asked you to comment on how successfully the author’s ideas and style convinced you of his argument. You will no longer be asked to do this.

Now you will be asked to summarise areas of agreement and disagreement between the two passages (see last year’s paper as an example of the new format). SQA says that a bullet point layout is acceptable.

Lay out your answer as follows:

State one area where the passages agree
Refer to/paraphrase/summarise a relevant point in passage one
Refer to/paraphrase/summarise a relevant point in passage two

State another area where the passages agree
Refer to/paraphrase/summarise a relevant point in passage one
Refer to/paraphrase/summarise a relevant point in passage two

State one area where passages disagree
Refer to/paraphrase/summarise a relevant point in passage one
Refer to/paraphrase/summarise a relevant point in passage two

If you are able to give even more similarities/differences in the time available, then do so.

The best thing to do is to look at the SQA's marking instructions for the final question in the 2012 paper which gives further details about what the examiners are looking for. Follow this link:
