I shall make a better posting at a later date, for now let me tell you that autoimmune diseases are very complex and trying to claim that they can be started by chemical exposure is going to be very difficult.
'Avoid all chemicals'.
FACT less than 2 % of all cancers in the US have been linked to chemical compounds of any sort.

The full dangers of DHMO Are another thing you ought to know. It's quite easily found 'Cos it lurks all around. So the chance of avoidance is low. www.dhmo.org/

Very well. You have the right response. In the first place, only about 2% of chemicals are tested. The rule seems to be that it is the public's job to find out if they are harmful, not the product developer's job to prove they are safe.
I am pointing out the harm of one of the worst chemicals out there: 2-butoxyethanol or ethylene glycol monobutyl ether
It has take me over three years to realize how much harm it causes. It should be suspect for the cause of CFS, CFIDS, FM. It should be suspect for the epidemic in obesity, NHL, diabetes and most of the autoimmune dysfuctions out there could be caused from it.
It is a teratogen so suspect it for autism, neuroblastomas, hemangiomas, diabetes as a birth defect such as our parents who were affected by getting the bomb fumes of WWII in their eyes.
I am like someone hollering that the world is round when most others think it's flat.
Check what China's people are being exposed to in their widespread industrialization: 1.8 million Chinese children have autism; 10,000 in Shanghai alone.
I have web pages on all of these topics, and if you are not interested, it is your loss. I have spent an inordinate amount of time to learn what I've learned, and my theory is provable.

Diabetes may be a Secondary Ailment ...
In my opinion, 2-butoxyethanol or a similar chemical has been poisoning many since before WWII days, and is a primary cause of diabetes and various cancers and birth defects being at epidemic proportions in Britain, Europe & the USA. Many things that are thought to be hereditary are actually decades of family members being chemically overexposed.
Consider this chemical also for OVERWHELMING FATIGUE: autoimmune hemolytic anemia that doesn't show up in the bloodwork the way doctors expect it should: look for blood in urine and red blood cells that are small-sized.
I believe it is the primary cause of CFS, CFIDS, FM and DIABETES. Diabetes gets blamed for the cause of many other things. And there is a philosophy that just getting the blood sugar down is going to alter its effects.
A parent's WWII exposure to the bomb fumes may now be causing birth defects in children ... the parent's personality would change. Many times 'heart attack' is the advance stage of 'the fatigue'
This chemical targets multiple body systems simultaneously. It is not a matter of a cancer starting somewhere and ending up in another location. Consider what MSDS info tells us; but you have to look at several - some are complete - others are not.
When you have 'the flu' but it's not the flu; and eyes burn and hurt and urine turns black ... look for sources of 2-butoxyethanol. Do you have the CFS assortment of symptoms?
There should be more serious respect for the Chronic Fatigue Syndromes. The fatigue is the common denominator. You have to prove the fatigue that doctors say they don't know what it is.
For helps try not to get exposed to this chemical; avoid all chemicals ... and go to good nutrition & helps such as glyconutrients as shared in Patient Heal Thyself by Rubin
Consider whether the pattern of this chemical's harm is there. It never would just cause one thing. (except for birth defects)

What data do you base this idea on? Which form of diabetes? What physiological and molecular mechanisms do you suppose cause diabetes? What conditions do you think diabetes is wrongly blamed for causing?

That's a lot of questions. Type 2 diabetes is the most common; and I would suspect that to be more from the teratogen effects of 2-butoxyethanol (ethylene glycol butyl ether type chemicals) I wouldn't be surprised if type 1 diabetes was a variation of the endocrine disruption that is going on. We are talking about a chemical that targets the liver, the kidneys all glands, especially the pituitary. So when you hear that someone's kidneys have failed because of diabetes ... think twice. As to structure, if it is OK, I will share this link: www.valdezlink.com/s...There was a man in the UK that gave me the best MSDS I have found on 2-butoxyethanol: Sigma-Aldrich Company Ltd. The Old Brickyard Gillingham, Dorset SP8 4XT, England Tel: 01747 822211 Product number: 579556 Their website: www.sigmaaldrich.com...Main problem is the autoimmune immune system Both types of diabetes have an autoimmune aspect

PS I should add, that with a lot of exposure to 2-butoxyethanol often doctors will note a spike in blood sugar. I don't know which type ... but I would suspect type 2. I learned a lot about this chemical by talking to those with know exposure: the bioremediation workers of the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup (using Inipol EAP 22) and the Corexit trials (that is 38% strong) AND to those with suspected exposure: 'gulf war syndrome' vets ... of which 28% have now fallen victim to a similar chemical. Actually, this and its compound version are 'on the list' of solvents and pesticides the gulf war troops were exposed to. The link is in my prior post. Not too many consider type 2 diabetes as being an autoimmune issue: check this link www.lef.org/protocol...I suspect we should look at the soft tissue sarcomas as a group and the leukodystrophies as a group ... & that this chemical could cause all of those variations. We should look at how different groups are alike - not how they are different. I found a singular leukodystrophy that was only found in the Auschwitz Jews of WWII. Then I found that Germans moved the manufacturing of detination muntitions to that camp in 1942 & even forced women to work in the plant. This indicates to me ... that too much exposure to this type of chemical can cause 'right now' leukodystrophy. 'Right now' diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes risk is clearly corelated to age and obesity. As such, a chemical that act simply as a teratogen is an unlikely candidate for being a major causal factor (unless it compromises Glucose metabolism, or Insulin production/sensitivity, in which case, you would expect to see earlier onset Type 2 Diabetes, and weaker corelation with the associated risk factors). If 2-butoxyethanol is a causal agent of Diabetes, then I suspect that it would be via direct toxicity, rather than teratogenicity.
The development of Type 2 Diabetes associated conditions such as renal conditions, neurological problems, and eyesight impairment have well established mechanisms related to hyperglycaemia, and insulinaemia. I can't see any reason to suppose that they are caused by anything other than Type 2 Diabetes; there is good corelation between proper glucose control via medication and diet, and reduced risk of development of associated conditions.
As far as I can tell, 2-butoxyethanol has not been classified as a human teratogen (although evidence of teratogenicity exists in rats) or carcinogen. There are no available studies showing that the compound causes cancer in humans. There are studies showing carcinogenicity in mouse models (but not rats), but there is a suggestion that the cancers are not caused by the chemical, but are secondary to haemolysis.
For review see, Gift JS. U.S. EPA's IRIS assessment of 2-butoxyethanol: the relationship of noncancer to cancer effects. Toxicol Lett. 2005 Mar 28;156(1)
Cogliano VJ, Grosse Y, Baan RA, Straif K, Secretan MB, El Ghissassi F; Working Group for Volume 88.Meeting report: summary of IARC monographs on formaldehyde, 2-butoxyethanol, and 1-tert-butoxy-2-propanol.163-78; Environ Health Perspect. 2005 Sep;113(9):1205-8.
There are exposure limits for humans working with 2-butoxyethanol that are based on direct exposure studies
Jakasa I, Mohammadi N, Kruse J, Kezic S. Percutaneous absorption of neat and aqueous solutions of 2-butoxyethanol in volunteers. Int Arch Occup Environ Health. 2004 Feb;77(2):79-84. Epub 2003 Aug 12.
Jones K, Cocker J. A human exposure study to investigate biological monitoring methods for 2-butoxyethanol. Biomarkers. 2003 Sep-Oct;8(5):360-70.
To be sure, there are noxious and toxic effects of 2-butoxyethanol, but I can see no evidence for your claims, either biological or epidemiological. It is right, cautious, and prudent, to avoid overexposure to any noxious agent, but I can't find any studies that support your fairly specific claims.

First off they don't test 2-butoxyethanol for expsoure route of the eyes. Dermal? Respiratory? only secondary, minor harm. No wonder they don't credit with all it does. "In the last 10 years, the incidence of diabetes in North America has risen by one third to 6.5 percent of the adult population, with the sharpest rise of 76 percent in 30 to 40 year olds. Diabetes causes nerve damage which leads to blindness, deafness, heart attacks, strokes, burning foot syndrome, amputations and kidney failure." www.drmirkin.com /diabetes/8567.html Dr. Mirkin Many things they blame on Diabetes .. I would suspect for the things that 2-butoxyethanol would do ... of which diabetes is just one of them; not the cause of the others Diabetes considered epidemic in USA - Britain www.valdezlink.com /pages/diabetes.htm Dramatically increasing in Britain ... Europe www.valdezlink.com /pages/dramaticallyincreasing .htm
