I want to tell you about an amazing wildlife sighting in our garden Sunday morning.
We have a spring running through our garden, the spring is piped from our garden, under several other gardens under a road and through to a ditch about 90 metres away. We were amazed to see an otter appear from the piped area Sunday morning. We watched the otter for about an hour as it came into our garden, disappeared and re-appeared from the pipe. I managed to take some photos despite the torrential rain (unfortunately the camcorder battery was flat!).
I have never seen a wild otter in this country before - this was definitely one of those "it doesn't get much better than this" moments!
Not wanting to boast but we also had two great spotted woodpeckers in the garden at the same time. I'm ashamed to say I totally ignored them, although this doesn't happen very often,I only had eyes for the otter.
This must beat eco-birding!

Hi supersariska (gosh I wish people would use easier to type user names!)
You don't say what part of the country you're in. Remember, otters are real creatures of habit so there's every chance you might see it again. It might of course be a male just passing through but even then he's likely to reappear at some point.
You could do a bit of detective work. Find the other end of the pipe and with luck you should find some otter signs, either a track you could follow or maybe spraint (this is often left at entrances to 'underground' pipes).
You say this is all under a road. A good otter conservation tip is to make sure the pipe is kept clear so that the otter(s) can use it. Many otters are killed having been forced to cross roads because of blocked drainage pipes. If you suspect it's getting blocked, inform your local roads dept c/o your council.
Fantastic spot. Thanks for telling us all about it.

Hi,
Sorry about the user name, I only joined tonight and everything I thought of was already being used.
I live in North Wiltshire a few miles from the Thames.
I am going to attempt to put some photos on, unfortunately they are not too great as the weather was so awful and I didn't want to frighten the otter.
I still can't believe how lucky we were - I will be glued to the window all weekend!

Hi SS (there, that's easier), I was not being serious about the name, it's just that SOME on here are truly keyboard-bending!
Look forward to seeing the photos. And I'd still encourage you, if you can, to get out and do some spoor-spotting. You might even find some pawprints, how cool would that be.

You lucky, lucky, so and so. My wife and I have twice recently been to strumpshaw RSPB reserve in Norfolk. On both occasions we have entered the Fen hide only to be informed that the otters were just there, literally 2 minutes before. I am SOOOOO Jealous.

Hi, I would be interested to know if you can identify the 'bird' in the photos! Only joking, it was a present and we've never worked out what it is supposed to be. benms.co.uk/otter/ot...benms.co.uk/otter/ot...benms.co.uk/otter/ot...

Super photo's, Gosh! you are lucky. Do you know there are people who work to preserve otters & some have never seen a live wild one. Your duck is a hybred, it probably has a Mallard dad & a farmyard mum though. Val

Isn't this what nature is about? We've spent holidays looking for certain animals and not seen them. Can you imagine how we felt walking into our kitchen Sunday morning, looking out of the window and seeing an otter? We do not back onto fields, we have lived here 18 years, we occasionally see hedgehogs, foxes and squirrels, but never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined we would get an otter in the garden.
Don't give up looking, you never know what you might see!

Yay, great photos! What a brilliant record of its visit.
My first guess would be a male (no prizes for guessing what my second guess would be!). But they can be difficult to sex. Your own impression of its size might help. I'm going somewhat by the appearance of its head.
Wow.

How fantastic. To see an otter peering round the edge of your shed must have been so exciting and quite surreal. I have a large pond, with visits from mallard, heron and even grey wagtail, but I don't think however long I gaze out of my kitchen window, I will ever see anything as remarkable as that.

Our guess is the otter was male, it was quite large, have studied my other photos but no obvious signs showing!
Got to go into the garden in daylight this morning before going to work, a few marks - no complete paw prints - quite a few flattened plants. We think it must have stayed in the garden longer than we thought - I saw it disappear around 10.30 on Sunday morning and thought that was that. I even had a quick look around about 12.00 but couldn't see anything, then I banged a window shut at 1.30 and it suddenly re-appeared from behind some bushes and disappeared down the pipe.
You can guess what I will be doing this weekend.

I understand those 'obvious signs' can also be misleading (if I understand the way your post is nuanced).
I'm just amazed that this has happened out of nowhere. Most often you hear of folks who are pretty sure there's an otter around, have maybe looked for years, might have caufght a glimpse of what might have been one once etc etc.
But in your case, BANG, there it is. Never even a thought that you'd ever see one.
Love it. Hope you have a terrific weekend and look forward to hearing more.

Oh, how wonderful! Despite regularly finding and reporting otter spraint to the wildlife trust and county mammal recorder, I've never once seen one in the wild.

Hi,
Just thought I would post an update. As we thought last weekend, the otter was a truly amazing one-off sighting.
Have spent a lot of the weekend looking out of the window, have had a big influx of birds into the garden but no otter. To be perfectly honest I think it was on a scouting mission, as there is no food source in our garden I didn't think it would return. I'm just so thankful we were in last weekend to witness a once in a lifetime garden experience!

Hi supersariska, I've literally been all at sea for the past few days and only just got back. Shame it didn't reappear, but I honestly doubt it'll be the last time you see it (or at least see signs that it's been around). Read up about otter signs and keep looking from time to time (was it Shaw Taylor on Police Five who used to say "keep em peeled"?).
Thanks for sharing this with all of us.
