Message 51 - posted by The Mighty Montagu (U9767405) , Nov 18, 2008

Hello Jem
You aksed why Album Wars was too big for the Flip Side.

This thread will give you an idea of what some posters' views were (and may still be):
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...

The views were mixed, but generally that Album Wars should continue but not so that it engulfs the other fun stuff on that board.

I don't want Album Wars to stop and I was really pleased when Ben took up my suggestion to re-start them on a vacant board. I admire the task Ben has set himself, although I have not contributed myself. I believe Album Wars requries it's own TEMPORARY Board and would encourage you to enable that to happen.

Thanks.

Engulfed the fun stuff on that board? You mean the handful of threads that folks actually post on occasionally? That board is as dead as a do-do and it was the perfect home for Album Wars until a couple of miserable so and so's who couldn't be ar*&d to do a bit of scrolling, complained about it!

Can I remind people that threads that are used rise to the top, threads that don't sink like a stone? To keep threads current people have to post on them. The fact that Album Wars was always at the top of the Flip Side board shows how popular it was.

Nevertheless it got hounded off Flip Side by a couple of moaners, now it's been booted off Student Essentials by the Board Aministrators.

Yes and what's this stupid idea to have a "Don't cancel Christmas thread" a throughly patronising idea that assumes that we're all some latter day profligate workhouse poor imagined up the beeb's public schoolboy educated to be in need of good advice by their "experts".

Can we get some perspective on this, please? There were never more than about eight people posting on Album Wars - the same handful who are now campaigning for its reinstatement. What surprises me (apart from the vehemence of sis's response) is how committed these folk were to choosing two albums from arbitrarily chosen lists of ten. Why? What was the point? To compile yet another uberlist? And surely the idea that the final list would be representative of the tastes of members of this board is belied by the tiny number taking part.

Along, it seems, with the majority of posters on here, I wasn't remotely interested in Album Wars. I have perfectly legitimate misgivings about the whole format, and although its encroachment onto the Flip Side didn't personally bother me, I can see why it did some posters. But I don't see why it couldn't continue with just one thread for replies to all the lists. This might make more work for Ben, but as the Bard pointed out, it is after all a task he set for himself.

Thanks, Wu, for a reasoned message. On this, your thoughts are also mine. I concluded very early on that, if the best 3 albums ever appear in one of the lists, then, by nature of how the Album Wars were set up, one of the best 3 albums ever would not appear in the final top 10. On that basis, I have not contributed. However, I did notice negative mentions of Album Wars in a few other threads so decided to make a reasonable suggestion to house it elsewhere. I asked for others' views and got them. What seems to have been forgotten is that Ben had a separate dispute with a poster and decided to leave the boards at about the same time as the opinions on Album Wars was kicking off. I have deliberately stayed out of the arguments. I also suggested, perhaps with a slight feeling of guilt for contributing to the upset felt by a minority of posters, that it would seem reasonable to continue on the Student Essentials Board. That seemed to be the most suitable solution for all of us when Ben returned. I do wonder, though, if the Hosts bothered to actually look at that Board before replacing it with another.

Yeah, I was annoyed and still am. It wasn't doing anyone any harm whatsoever, just a regular posting enjoyed by a few on a dead board. So what if it's only a handful of us? So what if it's not relevant? So what if most of the posters on here weren't interested? What's that got to do with anything? A few of us enjoyed it, and it could have happily carried on without making one jot of difference to anyone else. For something that 'people weren't remotely interested in' I find it strange that suddenly they've got summat to say about it!

The ONLY possible inconvenience it caused to ANYONE was the fact that they had to scroll down to find other threads? That was it! It was one thread a day.

If that Flip Side board had been buzzing with loads of 'fun stuff' threads erm and it was in some way preventing them from getting to them - like a major inconvenience or something - then fair enough. But the board was, and is, as dead as a Do-do.

You can pontificate, and use long words and go all around the houses as much as you like, but the fact is it wasn't doing anyone any harm and a few of us enjoyed participating in it. Simple as that.

From Beet's post on the Flip Side, repeated above on this thread:

merely hinting that the final '20' would make for a great two hour show, as in the top tweny albums as voted for by the true listeners and music lovers of '2'

Quoted from this message

All eight of them.

Sis - I think you misheard. I asked for perspective, not invective.

So what if it's only a handful of us? So what if it's not relevant? So what if most of the posters on here weren't interested? What's that got to do with anything? A few of us enjoyed it,

Which could just as easily be said by the regular Flip Siders.

For something that 'people weren't remotely interested in' I find it strange that suddenly they've got summat to say about it!

I'm surprised you can say something so silly, sis. I wasn't interested in posting on the Album Wars threads, but now the discussion has broadened, I don't think it's impertinent of me to have an opinion.

You can pontificate, and use long words and go all around the houses as much as you like

Don't waste your time Wu because I ain't going there. Save it for someone else.

You can pad it out as much as you like and turn this into an argument with me if that's what you want, but it don't change a thing. Fact is, it wasn't hurting anyone - just filling space on a dead board and it would still be trundling along quite nicely if people hadn't moaned about it.

If the moans had been justified fair enough. If the board had sprung into life when Album Wars stoppen then fair enough. If the punters who complained had started interesting new threads then fair enough. But none of that happened. Album Wars got shunted for no good reason and now it's been kicked off again and you can argue all around that till the cows come home if that's what you want, but it don't change the facts.

Come back with another repost if you want, but you won't be engaging me in any verbal sparring.

That's it, sis, wade into my perfectly reasonable post then accuse me of trying to start an argument. Then restate everything you've said before, only louder, ignoring what I've said and missing out the fact that I've said I think the Album Wars thread should continue, then flounce off, blaming me for a fight you started but don't have the guts to finish. That's about par for the course on here.

Just for the record, I never said the AW thread was 'hurting anyone'. I said it didn't interest me and gave one of many reasons why. I didn't suggest people should abstain from it, or that it should be binned. What was a minor board-composition problem has been elevated by you, originally and again on this thread, into a bad-tempered spat where you freely pour scorn on other posters (you know, the 'moaners' who can't be ar$ed etc) while taking OTT offence at anyone who disagees with you or comments on the high-handedness of your remarks.

Ok. the student essentials board is still here:
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...

Its been archived which i admit doesn't look very elegant. "deleted" all over the place.
This probably should have happened when student essentials finished back in September.

I'm at a loss to work out why the album game threads ended up on that board and sorry but its not really the best place for it. So apologies for doing that at at short notice
but The Flip Side is set up for that sort of thing.
Ok ?

Did you actually read any of those Deleted threads from the defunct Student Essentials Board? This one for example: www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...

True, its not the best place for it, but surely changing the title of the Board would have saved a lot of friction?

Our experts will be checking this message board from 17 - 23 November, offering their help and advise where they can.

Right. First off..

Jem,
Many thanks for actually doing something and helping to get 'Album Wars' back.

Wu,
No, it's not gonna rewrite music history, but it's a distraction for a few of us, as are other 'Flip Side' threads. In fact I just thought of another; 'Rock Star Fruit 'n' Veg'..

Tina Turnip
John Lemon
Elvis Parsley

I win.

Ben,
I have moved over to 'The Flip Side' the majority of your 'Album Wars' threads, so, hopefully we can continue. I'll shift the rest tomorrow. Meantime, if anyone else wants to join in, please do!
No moaning please.

Cheers,
Hank.

I get so fed up with people not actually reading what I've written, then repeating back to me a point I haven't made, that I won't be bothering any more.

'Rewrite music history'? Yes, Hank, I see the point you're making, it's just a bit of fun, but my misgivings about the AW thread weren't at any point framed in those terms. And if I was looking for threads that would rewrite music history (as if such a thing were possible) then I wouldn't have spent the last few years on here. I simply do not understand threads of lists. Any lists. I don't understand what people get from posting or reading them. If they're contained within, and explain, a musical argument, then fair enough. But they very rarely are. And with the advent of y/t clips, the syndrome has become rampant - viz the Philly thread (which I know will upset some people, which is not my intention - but if you're not prepared to take on board the principled dissent of your fellow posters, or me, as he's better known laugh the whole place might as well be, as the trolls claim, a private club).

Fact is, this place has changed, which is inevitable. Like most aspects of our lives today, this has been technology-driven, in this case by the availability of y/t. It's there, so people use it, me included, but on a board that is essentially word-driven, I would rather words and ideas were given more respect. More than that, I would rather people could disagree with each other without the roof caving in. I know you people and I don't know you people. I care what you think and I don't care what you think. It matters and it doesn't matter.

Anyway, I want to wish everybody (except the trolls) all the best. I've had some fine times on here - there are some witty, insightful, committed people to meet here - but when it stops being enjoyable, best to stop.

Mister Wu,

I can only hope this is one of those 'Stones Final Tour' type farewells, and you'll be back soon.

I am guilty of often hastily reading a post and dashing off a reply without, I guess, examining every word for it's angle and weight, and last night was one of those occasions. I'd been cuttin' and a pastin' those Album War thingies over to the Flip Side all evening and was letting off a little gentle steam.

I know that's not the reason you're ducking outta here, but it's me giving you a friendly thump on the arm.

Don't be a stranger.

Hey Wu,

Don't make the mistake of thinking you've got free will here and don't be so selfish!

For a start, Mads needs you when she starts getting sentimental.

I need you for when I'm getting a bit slapdash or up myself (not that I can ever remember an example of course).

Anyway, who's gonna run the FPET (Forensic Post Examination Team) - amswer me that!

The rest need you for similar reasons and, when you're not dishing it out to all and sundry, you're a nice fella with a keen sense of humour (often missed) and a good musical knowledge.

Anyway, all boards need an edge to keep the posters on their toes and Raver can't do it on his own, that's not fair.

So, I'll look on your post as a good opportunity to play a top Dan track and expect you back here with a withering reply shortly.

Ten reasons why I want my mate Wu to stay.

1. He's me mate.
2. He's made more comebacks than Frank Sinatra.
3. He dissed Philly (redundant of anything since 1774)
4. He's me mate.
5. He can be funny, in more than one sense of the word.
6. By reading his posts, I've discovered I sould say "I've", instaed of "i've"
7. He hates lists.
8. He's me mate.
9. He laughs at my jokes.
10.I loves him.
11. He taught me to count.

Now duck off and don't come back.

Wu,

For what it's worth, I feel quite honoured to have finally joined the ranks of those who have had a barney with your good self. I feared it would never happen, but good things come to those who wait.

I feel like I have gone through some right of passage (no double entendre intented) and it is only now I have truly 'arrived' as it were, and can stand shoulder to shoulder with those amongst my fellow posters, who have at one time or another sparred with the Wumeister.

I can only echo what's already been said - if you do decide to go - the board will be a lesser place without you. Hopefully you will reconsider.

If you've still got the hump with me then that's ok as well, but as far as I'm concerned it's all done, dusted and forgotten.

Now I must dash as I have some lists that need compiling.

To think Wu, I said in a post the other day, that you should post your wonderful explanation of 'MacArthur Park' again.
It still rates (for me anyway, along with Soulsis's post about music in general) as one of the finest posts I've read.

This posting will (if no other one comes before I post this) the 90th (and no I can't be bothered to spell ninetieth here) on this one somewhat pointless thread, started by (allegedly) one of the faceless people who have some sort of control over these boards.
I bet he/she are loving it.

All I will say Wu, is that if you have chosen to go then go, if you really feel that strongly.
Personally speaking, I think your disappearance from these boards is as likely as would have been King Herod, starting a boys club.

As you quoted 'I know you and I don't know you'
(I daren't go back to far, in case I lose this message)
Yes, I know you from your thoughtful writings. I don't know you as a person, and judging from your occasional tantrums wouldn't want to really.

But, I'm sure you're a smart guy who must have a life that involves writing or something that requires you to be well read.
All I'll say is that if you have the power of the word (I don't. All I write is what I feel) don't take it out on others.
Your comment to Soulsis about her English Literature, was really below the belt. OK the wounds may have been healed (maybe) but that was ungentlemanly conduct.

I was one of the so called eight, who regularly (and will still continue to do so) post on the 'Album Wars' thread. Why? The same reason I posted on the 'Cover version' thread', the 'Name and initial' thread and the wonderful alphabetical song title thread from last year.
And why you (or anyone for that matter) may ask does an all round lover of music, mainly classical want to do that? (when I could be having an intellectual discussion on an aspect of music with the likes of your good self and many other of my friends on this board.
No. My discussions are never intellectual. God how I hate that word. I like to think I just speak about something as I feel)

Why?. Because it's fun. It makes me relax, after a hard days grind.
This board is fun and a great release of musical feeling. If you love music you'll know just how good it is to talk to fellow lovers (maybe not the correct term) about it.

So 'mon ami' (bet you hated that) but you still are, please yourself.
Maybe you'll post again, decimating all the previous post with remarks about the phraseology. grammar or the fact that nobody has listened to you, maybe because you try to be a little bit too clever.
It doesn't do you any favours.
I've gone on now long enough, probably having wasted the last half hour or so (I don't type fast)

If you come back, please yourself and if you don't, then it was nice communicating with you.
Just remember that it takes all sorts to discuss things.
Some posters on here have probably achieved more so far in their lives (yourself included no doubt) than I ever have, or will.
I have just always loved music and talking about it is a great release to me. Company man for 35 years, Nothing great. Three O levels on leaving school at 16 and that is about it. Can play piano, but can't sing.

Wu. I've gone on long enough and, if you post in the next few days, your ego would have had a boost because so many people have asked for you back.
Me after somethings on this crazy thread, couldn't careless. I'm just appalled (and little things mean a lot) at that below the belt remark against 'Soulsis' Hey? What do I know? it may have been in jest or a good joke, but it sure as hell didn't seem funny to me.

Never mind. I wish you well good Doctor (as I do all posters always) if you don't return for about the third time.
My evening has gone writing this diatribe (mind you England/Germany, friendly? no thanks)

Take care

Beet

All I'll say is that if you have the power of the word, don't take it out on others.

So, because Wu's vocalbury is slightly larger than most, he's to let people make snippy remarks about it and not respond?

Beet, will all due respect, Wu's post was a calm explanation of why he doesn't feel like posting here, I don't see any evidence of the so called 'tantrum' which you and Plainz have alluded to.
Expressing a difference of opinion is not a tantrum. There seems to be a lot of difficulty on here with people grasping that simple concept.

And just as a sign off, you have a right to say you wouldn't want to know him as a person but I do know him as a person and you don't know what you're missing.

So, I'll look on your post as a good opportunity to play a top Dan track and expect you back here with a withering reply shortly.

I'm waiting....

Seriously Wu, majority of folk want you back; warts, humps, fluffy boll...head and all!

I don't know you as a person, and judging from your occasional tantrums wouldn't want to really.

Did you omit to put "part time ventriliquist" in your hobbies, Bert? Because you spend a lot of time speaking out of different orifices.

This is a man who drove all the way from Oxford to Frimley, to visit my daughter in hospital earlier in the year, when she smashed her pelvis. He's a total pussycat in real life, and I would defend him to the death. Sure, we've had minor differences of opinion, but as friends, we can overlook and laugh at our peccadilloes.

You think he's not upset by your remarks.? I would pretty much guarantee that he is. As MM said, that last post he did, was measured and reasoned, and in no way a "tantrum". I found it very moving, knowing the man.

Take care or don't take care. I don't care.

Beet, Wu's remark honestly didn't offend me in the slightest. You obviously missed the bit where I accused him of pontificating and using long words? It was six of one and half a dozen of the other. He was the first in to reassure me a few weeks back when I struggled to find the words to articulate how I felt about Sam Cooke on that momentous day when Obama got elected.

This was just a daft row, that shouldn't have this much fall out. There's a whopper going on over on the Cliff thread that makes this one pale into insignficance laugh. It's all water under the bridge now as far as I'm concerned and I hope we can just all leave it there.

Madmed, the use of the word "tantrum" was used very loosely, perhaps jokingly even, to refer to the occasional spats that occur on here.I can't be bothered to go back and read precisely what I did say,as I am confident without checking that I said the next time *anyone* has a tantrum meaning the whole damn lot of us winkeye.

As for Wu,and as I've never met him, but the impressions I have are favourable. He calls a spade a spade, but often does so using language that most of us could never muster, isn't afraid to go against the flow and encourages free thought and debate. The last bit he loves !He's also an interesting character IMHO.
You have to accept his way of saying things even if they are sometimes blunt, because that's thet way he is-with everyone (not just Soulsis)as far as I can see.

In short from what I know of him,I like the guy.
He'll be back !!

He's cleverer than you think - I thought you'd recognise a comedy north of the island accent, Mads!
