" I had my own blog for a while, but I decided to go back to just pointless, incessant barking "

: from The New Yorker cartoon ( Gregory ) that I'm keeping on the desk.

"I once had a dog" on Robin Dransfield's 'Tidewave'.

One of those MIA LPs that should not be.

Ralph McTells 'Old Brown Dog' (sniff)

Horribly corny, but I remember being in tears when he sang it on that special the MH show did for him.

Well I've got a dog and a good one too
And I keep her in my keeping
For to catch the hare that runs by night
As the Gamekeeper lies sleeping

We hadn't......

I can think of a few others too, it could be a rough night however.

It maybe a bit out of fashion (possibly illegal?) but 'Dido, Bendigo' is a good song.

"Sinatra & I" by James Keelaghan.

I notice James is doing a short UK tour in April now, taking in places like Faversham, but very few other dates. I thought he wasn't coming over until September. I think his new "trad" album "A Few Simple Verses" is finally out in the UK next month too. That's "trad" almost in the John Leonard sense though. Ewan MacColl songs as well as the likes of "The Bonnie Light Horseman", although none were written this year.

"Reynardine" (trad arranged all sorts of people) is about a sort of dog, I guess.

"Chasing the Jack" is a fiddle tune by Phil Beer.

There's a Bluegrass/old timey song called Old Rattler:

Rattler was a good old dog, as blind as he could be
But every night at suppertime, I believe that dog could see

Chorus: Here, Rattler, here; here, Rattler, here
Call old Rattler from the barn, here, Rattler, here

Rattler breaked the other night, I thought he treed a racoon
When I come to find him, he's barkin' at the moon

Rattler was a friendly dog, even though he was blind
He wouldn't hurt a living thing, he was so very kind

One night I saw a big fat racoon, climb into a tree
I called Ol' Rattler right away, to fetch him down for me

But Rattler wouldn't fetch for me, because he liked that racoon
I saw them walking paw in paw, later by the light of the moon

Grandpa had a muley cow, muley since she was born
It took a jaybird forty years, to fly from horn to horn

Now old Rattler's dead and gone, like all the good dogs do
Don't put on the dog youself, or you'll be going there too
