Dear Everyone,
there seems to be some concern about the future of the Points of View message board following today's announcement regarding The Archers board.
To reassure you - here is a brief statement on this from Rowan Kerek Robertson who is the Editorial Lead for Social Media, BBC Vision:
"There are currently no plans at all to close the Points of View messageboard"
I hope that clarifies the situation.
Peter
Current - they told us that at the Archers too.

They said the Titanic was safe too!
Do you realise how many boards have been closed over the last couple of years? The past assurances and the way blogs were pushed at us do not exactly fill us with confidence that these boards will remain off the cutting agenda.

the Titanic was never advertised as safe, just unsinkable
There was a commitment from a now departed BBC exec that explained some of what BBC online was supposed to do. Although from 2010 it's worth a read.

Hi
So the BBC Trust is the iceberg then?
Both the 6 Music boards are going too, so leaving Learning English's www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb... and
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb... and this and the BBC Televsion programmes POV messageboards as the continuing services from 25 February 2012.

Not even slightly.
Experience has taught me that such statements are about as reliable as:
"The PM has complete confidence in the minister", shortly before he/she is forced to resign.
How it used to be:

They said that at the Bull, only a few months ago IIRC.
I do not think that there is any reassurance that can be given. One day someone will decide to close this board and I doubt anyone can predict or guarantee how far off that will be.
How it used to be:

Some great boards on that list. Wish I'd have got into the message boarding thing years before I did.

I think we can be reassured that it isnt closing in the next 2 weeks....
There are no Immediate plans but lets face it the Host can do NOTHING if the BBC decides to close it. Let's not shoot the messenger.

Thanks for shutting down my thread Peter. At least POV is staying open (for now)

It is off topic for this board - and just in case you weren't aware - there is a further blog post from Radio 4 Interactive Editor Nigel Smith dealing with user reaction to the decision to close The Archers message board.
Here it is:

Thanks,
Peter
Thanks, if you had read through it you will have seen me posting.Sad times.

Oh look! Half of *this* thread's gone now! I'm shocked, surprised, aghast, etc.
You know what, I'll probably miss these boards a lot less than I thought, once they've gone.

Should I start up a forum for BBC POV and The Archers?
No thank you usernamefood.
The BBC Points of View message board isn't closing, and there are plenty of well-established external Archers forums already, that have been created by people who have been using the Archers boards for years.
Does that mean we can't discuss The Archers on here Peta? After all it is a BBC programme.

Radio programmes, presenters etc are off-topic for this board Angua - as it says at the top of the board.
So no - this can't become a new place to discuss the Archers.
You're very welcome to come and join in with our community and discuss BBC TV programmes though.
No thank you usernamefood.

Could you please direct me to the 'plenty of well-established external Archers forums' to which you refer? Most grateful for your assistance of course!

I think we'd like to discuss the closing of the Archers MBs, not the programme itself. Is that not allowed either?

What about "THE BBC" surely it could be discussed there?

There was a thread which the temporary host closed for being off topic.
When I asked him on this thread why it was off-topic, he removed my question rather then answering it.
I think we'd like to discuss the closing of the Archers MBs, not the programme itself. Is that not allowed either?
Well not really no - because it is about radio and there are already several places on the BBC message boards and blogs where this is already being discussed.

Could it be discussed in the Green Room?
Sorry I only listen to the Radio - where can that be discussed please?
In theory yes I guess so, but we can't offer the Green room up as an alternative forum for the Archers - their community will hold together better if they all go en masse to one of the non-BBC forums.
Sorry I only listen to the Radio - where can that be discussed please?
The Radio division closed down their Radio message boards some time ago Angua - as you're probably aware.
Comments about Radio programmes can be submitted via email through the various BBC radio websites, you can also post to the BBC radio blogs.
You can also discuss BBC Radio programmes on a wide range of external websites and forums.

Oh no, I only meant for people to vent their feelings about the closure, not as an ongoing place to discuss the programme.

The best place for people to vent is on the Archers blog - that way the people that they're venting towards will read their postings!

Venting on the blog seems to result in getting moderated! Maybe The Bull is a better place to go.
Whichever you chose!
I know there have been a number of abusive posts on the blog, so people shouldn't be that surprised that they're removed. Being personally abusive won't help, it never does....

No, it doesn't.
But I do sympathise with the frustration and the anger from the posters. Directing posters to blogs to discuss the closure of the messageboards just compounds the already-strained emotions

OK, that is what I thought really, but as more than 1 Green Roomer is asking for somewhere here to discuss the closure, I just thought I'd ask.
I sympathise with them too - it's a terrible upheaval to have to move to a new platform, I hope they make it across safely and in reasonable numbers.
Martin, who used to work for the BBC and hosted this message board alongside me a long time ago has written these blog posts on his own blog.
I think he makes some valid points there...

Not sure why you would think I would be aware of that?
Blogs are a poor excuse for communication so no thanks.

All the blogs have proved is that questions raised are not answered so I can only assume that have not been read because surely the BBC would treat the questions and the questioners seriously and respond.

Interesting links, Peta.
I remember both Martin and Russ weighing in during the upheaval round these parts a few years back.

Because you say here
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...
That you have been using the BBC message boards for many years.
No - I said I have be using ML message board for years - its the only one I have used.
As it says at the top > how long have you been on the ML? <
As ML is closing I was trying to find somewhere else to discuss BBC output that I listen too.
And in Mustardland there were a number of welcoming threads for the refugees from other boards as they closed. Such as these boards www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...

Guv-nor, is that the link you meant? All the boards seem to have been closed in April 2011.
I think Guv was trying to point out that lots of other boards were closed, like the linked to Radio 4 ones, and many of the posters from the closed boards went to the Archers off-topic area.
When they closed, the Archers folk often put up welcome notices, for the new incoming boards...
