Just turned on the telly and found all the freeview channels had gone.

There was something about retuning today.

Retuned and they have still gone.

Anyone else having this problem on the south coast?

Did you re-tune or just scan for new channels?.
I had no problems with the changeover, but I think they advised that you treat it as if you have just got freeview and reinstall it from scratch.

    Hi Sonyjim,

    I did the 'automatic search'.

It did find a few channels e.g. Ch 5, QVC, and one or two others.

All the main ones are missing.

Well, it's R.I.P. Channel 5 in my house. I don't have digital - and hadn't planned to go digital for a while. Didn't think I'd need to as the south coast analogue signal wasn't due to be switched off 'til 2012.

I've heard that the digital signal was to be boosted following the change on the 25th of March. Could anyone confirm this?

If this is so I might be able to get away with using an indoor aerial instead of needing to get an outdoor one.

    Hi Spinning Head,

If you feel like 'wasting' £20 or so it might be worth trying a set top box. I was told that we can't get freeview here, but I bought a box anyway and it came through wall to wall using the old aerial. Then someone gave me the upgrade aerial which didn't appear to make any difference.

In fact the aerial is ten foot off the ground and points straight into a load of bushes in the next door garden. Everything was OK until this retuning thing.

I have retuned it several times and most of the channels, particularly the dross, have now come back - except the BBC! Dunno what that is about.

BBC Freeview from Rowridge is now on channel 34 if your box allows manual tuning?

I have read somewhere that some of the earlier boxes are not programmed to accept the required changes.
Most boxes are capable of downloading upgrade software which will improve it's performance. Has yours got this ability?. Some do this automatically but others require a manual input.
Perhaps you could try another box if one is available. This will at least isolate the problem, and prove if it's the box or the aeriel.
If the box is built into your television it becomes a whole new problem.

    Afternoon Z...

I don't have an outdoor aerial - but I've just invested in a new indoor one for just under £10. It's one highly recommended by the Digital UK website. I'll also get a reasonable settop box and see how that goes.

Do you think that if I send the bills to Channel 5 they might repay me? They have, after all, jumped the gun, so to speak.

I'm an optimist, by the way.

I've been peeing about with 2 freeview boxes and a BT Vision box this week.I've found that through the 'big' aeriel most channels are missing but through those little aeriels that you put on the telly no problems.I know we don't have full coverage here in west yorkshire but it's still pretty good.

Many thanks to all contributors who have tried to assist. I am able to report that after retuning again today even the BBC has been kind enough to put in an appearance. So, first attempt produced ch 5 and QVC with crystal clarity; second attempt produced most channels but not BBC 1 BBC 2 or BBC News on ch 80, although CNN which hadn't been there before suddenly appeared; third attempt seems to have produced more channels than you can shake a stick at, including the BBC.

It is all a bit of a mystery, but at least the much appreciated images of absurdity and insensate violence are back here in the sitting room wall to wall.

Incidentally, my first experience of freeview here was with an old aerial liberated from a skip and sellotaped to a photographic tripod, on the ground floor pointing straight through the garden fence and a load of very substantial bushes. One or two channels used to drop out in bad weather and moving the aerial ten foot up the wall has helped.

Bearing in mind that freeview is not supposed to be available here at all it's not so bad.
