Wouldn't it be great if we got Moffat to have a gander at some of the wonders of the net, in terms of other sequences being produced.
Yes, I'm sure that "Moffat" would be particularly predisposed to your idea when you refer to him in the same manner that an unpleasant landowner might refer to a lowly servant.

No idea how you came to that conclusion Gus from Alex's words.
Some of the "fan" work available online, particularly the youtube intro sequence he posted a link to is stunning, and far exceeds the current Doctor Who BBC intro in every measurable sense.
In tough financial times the BBC should be playing a more active role in looking where savings could be made with the public purse they accumulate. And with the added bonus of discovering new talent which help springboard the next generation of producers and artists.
I couldn't agree with Alex more, and youtu.be/8PKomuwyJVE... is most definitely a 1000% improvement on the "new" BBC intro. One was made by a fan, probably in their bedroom at zero cost, the other was paid for by the BBC most likely at considerable expense with a team of workers.
I know which one I would rather be funding through the tv licence..

I don't wish to appear like I'm dismissing this out of hand, but isn't the "fan" version basically just the BBC one with a few tweaks here and there?

He mentions paying for render farm time, and as far as I can tell seems to be using a lot of elements taken from the BBC one.
Also, remember that a talent contest creates its own costs and difficulties.

A few tweaks,,, Like the doors opening inwards and not outwards as in the BBC version?
What a fundamental mistake to make by the BBC in the title sequence!
Excellent work by the youtube fan, poor form by the BBC.

Obviously attention to detail is not one of your strengths..
If you read the comments you will see the fan uses Newtec Lightwave 3D 10, Trapcode and Adobe After Effects among others. All industry leading software. It wouldn't surprise me if the BBC used the same software. His TARDIS model is much more detailed than the BBC version, and his 3D skills are much more precise, especially with the physics of the TARDIS movement, rather than the cartoonesque BBC TARDIS. Viewing it in 1080p HD really shows off the differences in production values, from the artificial lens "dust", to the chromatic lens distortions at the edge of the screen and flares used.
It really is such a vast improvement, and yet they have been able to keep within the style and brief of the BBC version.
Cracking stuff, it speaks for itself.
Hat's off to them for being able to not only match, but improve upon all of the eliments the BBC version.
More of this please Mr (or Mrs) Xandercom!

Don't like it. Too flashy, too "eighties". The BBC version is better.
Did this really warrant a second thread when we already have a Doctor Who general discussion thread?

"too flashy", "too 80's" - excellent technical critique..
You realise the BBC 50th anniversary title sequence is supposed to take aspects of all the previous Intro sequences?
The fan has done a stunning job, managing to show clear aspects of the first title sequence, right up to the 70's and 80's star field, the asteroid fields, the Doctor's face, a retro logo, a higher quality time vortex, and even a hint of Matt Smith's previous "blue storm clouds" just before the planet flyby.
the BBC done a hap-hazard job, throwing too much at it for the sake of it with low production values, especially on the boring Doctor Who typeface. It was such a let-down to watch, from a fan's perspective, on Christmas day, then a fan comes along and trumps it with that little gem!
Haters are gonna hate! Fans appreciate.

I'm as much a Who fan as anyone, and have been since the 70's. I'm also entitled to my opinion, which is as valid as yours. And my opinion is that the latest version seen at Christmas is pretty good, while this fan version is not to my taste and to me looks both too flashy and amateurish. Sorry.

It is a shame that the vast, vast majority of youtube users seem to disagree with your 40 odd years of fandom. Perhaps time to move aside and let go of the past, or even make an intro of your own?

No, I don't think so. And I don't really care what "the vast majority of YouTube users" think; generally, they will cheer at anything from a monkey riding a bicycle to someone slipping on a banana skin. Why are you being so defensive about anyone daring to disagree with your opinion of what is, after all, just another fan video?

Well, I actually think that whoever designed the official title sequence of Doctor Who did a very good job.
The youtube user has produced an impressive alternative, but lets not forget that it is a development from the official theme.

It also deviates somewhat from the overall colour "theme" of mostly blues which the current programme designers seem to favour, meaning that the credits sequence would be at odds with the general style of the show itself. These things are not considered in isolation by designers.

Sorry to be an old cynic Alex, but you wouldn't by any chance be a maker of these types of videos, pitching for work in the mainstream??
I don't think the BBC has room on the payroll for all the folks producing stuff for youtube (clever though some of them maybe) but it is no doubt a good forum for presenting stuff and things which are truly original will probably catch someone's eye.

Having watched it; I have to say that, while it has been done using professional software, I really don't like it. While there are bits that work, to my mind, most of it doesn't. It seems like a mishmash of stuff that, to my eye doesn't make sense; it feels wrong for what it means to do; the transitions are week. And, at the end, where the Tardis doors open, there seems to be a disconcerting lack of balance between the doors. Under normal circumstances, this wouldn't be a problem, but in an opening sequence, I think it matters.

They produced the current titles, and obviously had absolutely no idea that the sign on the door that says "pull to open" doesnt in this case mean the doors open outwards.
Though it's not the way the TARDIS doors (usually) open, I find the opening with the doors swinging out more aesthetically effective than inwards -- it suggests opening out to something big, while the other way seems to be moving in to something smaller.

A fan has corrected that error within weeks of the title sequence being first broadcast, and not only that but has remastered in it's entirety the title sequence to brilliant effect.
You seem to be acknowledging the observation I made earlier. Of course we can all admire the fan's skills, but there's little evidence here that he's the creative genius his admirers seem to be claiming. Let's just keep some perspective - all he's really done is taken someone else's creative work and tweaked it a bit.

You seem to be a new poster here riverkat-and also seem to have picked up a habit of snarling at people who disagree with you-doesn't come over very well if you want to discuss a subject sensibly -do you do that "in real life"?
For the record it is a nice video-but is it really that much better than the one used now and is really worth such excitement?

It seems the BBC (run that website) and FANS disagree with you, along with 99.9% of the 15k people who have thus far seen their intro.
And no, I didn't make the video, but I would love to meet the person who did, and of course I have no way to counter your pointless accusations to the contrary.

You're the only one on this thread who's ranting, riverkat.
But of course, the jaded opinion of armchair warriors with little or no talent in anything other than trolling the threads of others is what really defines the artwork created by others....
Talking of "artwork created by others" do you not agree that this video is mainly the work of the original creator rather than the person who tweaked a few bits?

Also, the copyright at the the bottom of the page separates BBC content from their own -- look at the bottom of this message board for contrast.

If you post to the video on youtube your comments have to be approved.
I would imagine that attracting 1000's of views per day would lead to spam and trolls, and i guess they can moderate their work in any way they please, unlike here where the right to negative ranting is given and expected. Perhaps best if you stick to POV armchair warrior territory?
I'm sure the video creator is excited to have their work featured in such a wide variety of forums, podcasts, facebook, twitter, youtube itself, and whatever other areas it expands in to. Continually bumping this thread up to the top gives it the publicity it deserves!
No one is going to bother reading through the pages of rants on POV, and the POV ranters will have their work cut out for them when the video creator, or someone like them creates the next Who intro sequence.
Well done Alex!
