How do the photographers know that all the baby penguins are female?
Their tiny dolls...

Here we go peeps. I can't believe it is the last ep!
Wow, that was amazing the Adelie penguin coming to the rescue of the Emperor. I couldn't help laughing at the penguins spraying the vampire bats and hitting their neighbours instead. Childish I know but it gave me the giggles.
Yet another great pictures but dire commentary that should be on CBBC

Ducks taking on birds of prey. Now I've seen everything!
This programme was an absolute joy from start to finish. I loved the music, the commentary, the spy cams. I would never get tired of watching programmes like this and it is to be hoped the BBC never tire of making them
I was a nervous wreck by the time that Rockhopper chick reached the water, they must be made of rubber they way they take tumbles and bounce straight back. I loved the cavalry arriving in the form of ducks.
I loved the way the Adelie went to the rescue of the chicks then thought "right, I have had enough of you lot, off you go" and pushed them into the water.
I hope that the arrival of the Adelie means that there will be another series.

Spy in the huddle is a family friendly show, just right for the teatime repeat slot on BBC One of a Sunday afternoon: I enjoyed the commentary.

We loved this programme; the camera work was stunning and the music didn't overwhelm the action. For us, David Tennant's commentary was a delight - charming and not at all "dumbed down".

This has been an enjoyable series, endearing and educational.
And it avoided any criticism that we saw too much of the presenter - by not having one!
I liked David Tennant's narration too - a good balance between fun and fact. (He's in a new series next Monday - 'Broadchurch' on ITV).

I agree this programme has been a joy to watch, superb camera work and David Tennants narration is good as always. His voice is perfect for narration. One of the very best wildlife programmes I have seen. This programme was definitely not dumbed down.
Not dumbed down ? Clearly a matter of opinion as it reminded me of a Walt Disney type film with cute, cuddly animals as characters going through a journey to music and a script for kids to match
That can be said, but the programme is still appealing.

Dave you really didn't find this charming at all did you
However I did and you are doing the CBBC channel a disservice.
Great programme and very welcome especially the repeats on Sunday.
My cat loved it and what's wrong with a bit of Disneyfication? Better than grim reality on a cold and dark winter's evening.

I actually thought the script was pitched just right, and narrated superbly by Mr Tennant. It was a thoroughly delightful programme from start to finish ... at least in my opinion.
Oh well, tastes differ.

I loved the first two of these! Really good telly - but I thought it was only two programmes. From reading this thread I have realised I missed the final episode on Monday - does anyone know if it will be repeated?
You and I have the same taste, Rosemary. I wouldn't spit this one out!
The programme is truly remarkable. A piece of history which will be seen by many for years, and the younger generation will be amazed when they get to see it.

That's what I think! Amazing! Absolutely amazing!
You can get into the habit of nit-picking everything, but it only spoils your enjoyment. Better to just focus on the good! TV doesn't get better than this - a wondefrul treat now 'Africa' is over!
So the baby penguins were all 'she' - well, 'he or she' is cumbersome and 'it' just doesn't fit a series that shows the personalities of these birds. When I worked on a sketchbook of the birds I saw on a trip abroad and the birds could't be easily sexed on sight, I referred to them all as 'he' in the in the notes by each sketch. It just seems so much better than 'it' - a leftover from the bad old days when people didn't credit animals and birds with intelligence, personality and feelings.
The emperors were my favourites and the Adelie penguin coming to the rescue was fantastic! As they said, this series has shed new lights on penguin behaviour. There is a book,;The Selfish Gene', that claims all living creatures (except us when we behave ourselves) are out to make sure theri own genes survive. Now that looked like genuine altruism. I'm not so sure about the ducks - they apparently beat up those birds of prey whenever they see them.

What a fabulous conclusion to an awesome series. Certainly the best of the BBC. Thank you.
I loved David's 'humorous' but 'informative' commentary, the soundtrack (is it being released at all?), the photography, the story lines and the fact that it wasn't all 'blood and guts'. It was great to see the little penguin chicks escape from those horrible birds.
My favourites: the Emperors
Now to Amazon to order the DVD!

Hi Myles,
Spot on right about everything! Exactly what I feef!
We loved it. OK, so it was wildlife "light" with its amusing music and its anthropomorphizic narration but it educated, informed & entertained. Just what the BBC is supposed to do.

Just bumping up the repeat.
We've been watching the repeats rather than the originals, so really enjoyed it this evening. I'm now besotted by the Humble penguins
What plucky little birds they are! Mind you the Emperor babies were cute little fluff balls too.
A wonderful series with excellent commentary and appropriate (fun) music.

Thanks for this, Bethgem.
I haven't forgotten. I've just had a techical problem, soon to be sorted, and wondered if there is still any interest in my penguin painting, since the series has finished and the discussion lapsed.
It seems better to ask than to just jump in and post a link.
