The trailers look fascinating and it's by Stephen Poliakoff. Yes, I know that some dislike him and others love him and I belong to the latter. I just wish the BBC would tell us WHEN it's going to start.
Advanced publicity looks good:

I have adored much of his earlier stuff, but lately he has had scripts accepted purely on the strength of his name rather than their individual merit.
Glorious 39 anyone?
This does look good - but then Glorious ALSO looked wonderful in the trailers. And then you watch the biggest load of tosh you ever saw and waste 2 hours of your life. Who can forget the leading lady, imprisoned by her own family for years, escaping and running through the strangely deserted streets of daytime London in a flowing satin nightgown.
It was like a perfume ad.
I will give this a go in hope......

Have the same reservations as Bidie; and the trailers aren't helping.
Fingers crossed!

"Glorious 39" wasn't his best effort but I don't think that he should be judged on one work when you consider that he has written so much good stuff.

'Friends and Crocodiles'.....
I am a fan, Gargle, but feel - in the manner of the late Dennis Potter - he can get things commissioned that, if submitted by Joe Bloggs, would be rejected. His work always LOOKS beautiful, but that seems to be at the expense of a decent, believable plot.

Well, we'll be able to judge when it is aired. Not too long away I hope. Unusually for Stephen Poliakoff, this is a six parter.

I'd agree with your lists Chris, though hadn't heard of The Tribe, and would add the fabulous Caught on a Train (Peggy Ashcroft and a young Michael Kitchen) to that list. I rather liked Glorious 39.

In my opinion his very best followed very closely by Caught on a Train (which you missed off
)
But I will certainly be watching this new one

Poliakoff ?
No no no no no...

'The Lost Prince' was excellent - but then Mr P was just telling the true story of Prince John and that time in history.
When he has free reign to invent a plot he sometimes gets carried away on characters and forgets to give them anything much to DO.

Some friends of mine were waxing lyrical about a film they had seen on TV, turns out it was a repeat of Glorious 39. I thought that it was very good too but I know not everyone will agree.

What a singularly pointless post. OK, you don't like Poliakoff but it seems rather stupid to judge a work before it has been aired.

@goodhelen - The Tribe is an odd beast - made a couple of years before it was shown, generally hated, actually poor in many ways (Poliakoff attempting to depict a young hippy-trippy community and mostly failing), but it succeeded almost entirely on its atmosphere, including Adrian Johnston's hypnotic scoring (and Anna Friel naked, for many)
@dean - I know, I'm too ambivalent about it to call it either way!

'Caught on a Train' was superb.
'Stronger Than the Sun' is another Poliakoff brilliancy.

It is fashionable on this board to dislike Poliakoff so negativity is the knee jerk reaction when anything new of his comes along.

What is or is not "fashionable" on this board is of no interest to me.
My fully formed view before posting on this board is that Poilakoff is a playright of stunning mediocrity.

Phil-ap, I was a fan of Poliokoff for a very long time - The Lost Prince is still one of my all time favourite dramas. But his more recent work has, frankly, been poor. 'Caught on a Train' was outstanding, and 'Shooting the Past' thought provoking and skillfully written.
But 'Friends & Crocodiles'?
'Glorious 39'?
Submitted by any other writer and they would never have been MADE.
Nonetheless I shall be watching his new series with everything crossed for a return to form. It certainly LOOKED fabulous.....but then, so did Glorious 39.

Shooting the Past is one of my favourite pieces of television; I'm not usually one to re-watch films or television (as there's always so much more to see), but this is an exception.
I didn't realise that Stephen Poliakoff had made so many turkeys - but then I've not seen any of those listed as such. Look forward to Dancing on the Edge, and hope that it won't spoil my previous joy in his work.

I've been really looking forward to this. Some of my favourite actors are in this: Angel Coulby was one of the best things about Merlin, I can't wait to hear her sing and Chiwetel Ejiofor is one of the most underrated actors around.
Reminds me of a biography I read about the singer Leslie 'Hutch' Hutchinson which introduced me to how interesting this era was. Noticed in the BBC Media pack that Chiwetel referenced him for his portrayal of Louis.
I heard they're bringing out a music soundtrack to the series as well!
Watched Glorious 39 on a flight a few years back and fell asleep through it but hoping this drama will be a return to form.

Why has everyone got a thing against Glorious 39. I thought that it was very good but I accept that the critics were split roughly 50:50 for and against.

I liked it, though can no longer remember the plot. It's true that Poliakoff focuses on atmosphere, sometimes at the expense of plot. I do remember that Glorious 39 captured the sense of impending unpleasantness and refusal in certain quarters to acknowledge what was coming, and it had a cracking cast (which isn't always a guarantee of success, I know).

Does anyone know when the air date is? Surely, they could find a slot on a Saturday night. After Merlin got axed, there is nothing decent on.

It makes a good companion piece to Warsaw Spies. Different country but same period.

An interesting point, although set in the 30s, the music featured is not contemporaneous but has been specially composed by Adrian Johnston. A soundtrack album is to be released at the same time.
Here's hoping that it lives up to the trailers.

I was just going to post about that; quite a good piece with Poliakoff in the Metro today that says this.
Johnston is a stunning composer - his music for P's Shooting the Past is sublime, and he's scored almost all of his work.
Songs by him, in the style of the 30s, will be fun.

Too often a case of style over substance imo, which is often the case with contemporary dramas.. I can't remember the last time I saw anything where i cared about the characters.

The storyline of this drama relates to the discrimination suffered in the 1930s, how black performers had to use the back door etc
Apparently the Duke of Kent is portrayed, could be interesting to see what they make of him

Indeed. Mr Ploppy Cloth has got previous for producing visually stunning works of social commentary, with carefully drawn characters and well crafted scripts. I just wonder if he can keep me riveted for six episodes.
