How did the new member, Dave, of the Eggheads, get in the team for Thursday's programme? Pat and Barry had to win "Are you an Egghead" to get on.
When the 7 photos came on at the start there was no CJ. Where is he?

Dave Rainford appeared on "Are You An Egghead?".
He lost to Barry Simmons in the semi-finals.
CJ has left the building....
I knew that CJ was leaving the show but was rather surprised that this was not mentioned in what was presumably his final appearance on Wednesday.

I too was surprised that Jeremy did'nt mention CJ, together with the usual guff, such as 'we wish him all the best for the future' etc.
Apparently he left the show last November, and the recordings have just caught up.
Very strange!
I knew I remembered the new bloke from somewhere but found it strange they didn't seem to explain his sudden appearance or the end of CJ, who I'll miss very much. Not everyone's cup of tea but a character nonetheless, I'm sure we'll get used to the new chap though as we did Barry and Pat.

it's weird isn't it? i just switched over because the news was too depressing, and there was this new bloke - unannounced - sitting in poor CJ's seat - like banquo's ghost.
why didn't he have to win AYAE to qualify for the job?
he's an imposter.

I suppose they repeat the shows so much it would be odd in years to come to have one suddenly introducing the new guy. They should have mentioned it in the programme announcement though or done another "So You Want To Be An Egghead."
I think that it is a shame that CJ's contribution to the programme was not acknowledged. It would also have been nice if Jeremy had given more of an introduction to Dave at the beginning of the programme - we had to wait until his head-to-head to be told anything about him and his appearance on "So You Want to Be an Egghead" (which I didn't know about) wasn't mentioned. I imagine that some people (who haven't been paying attention during the opening credits) will think that they have just added an eighth Egg and that CJ will reappear in a couple of days. Good luck to Dave but I shall miss 'bad boy' CJ and his various hairstyles.

I'll miss "bad boy" CJ too.
His departure was certainly low-key - one wonders if there's more to his leaving than the he's letting on.

According to Wiki, CJ has left to take up an acting career, and "admitted that he hadn't spoken with any of his previous Eggheads colleagues for around a year."

That's quite sad - I remember he used to get on very well with Daphne in particular.

Regarding his acting career, I thought it was quite a coincidence that one of the questions on the new Eggheads was about the 'Pirates of Penzance' which is the very show that CJ is appearing in at the moment at Romford.
Yes, I thought the question about The Pirates of Penzance was a coincidence and I was surprised that none of the Eggheads seemed to know that the premiere was in New York (to protect the copyright). I wonder whether they would have known the location of the UK premiere (Paignton)

CJ totally ruined it for me - so arrogant and rude. I had the impression that others didn't like him too - so perhaps they were glad to see the back of him as well ??
I didn't mind old CJ he was quite entertaining in a strange kind of way and I too am very surprised that no mention was made of his leaving or the fact that the new man has replaced him.. all very low key.
Why couldn't it have been the very irritating 'know it all' that is Daphne!

I'm with you CJ's childish arrogance. Sadly I don't watch much now. Jeremy Vine's inane , patronising stupidity grates on me and Pat's lengthy answers to prove how much he knows are very annoying. I think new boy Dave is also part of the " talk them to death before I answer" clan.
Maybe the format has outlived its time.( Can you outlive your time ?)
I'll ask again, will someone please tell Jeremy Vine to ask the opposing player or the Eggheads if they know the answer to a question, he just blurts it out and I like to know whether they know or have more information. He's shocking as a question master and not a patch on Dermot, I wish he'd stick to POV or something else where he just reads a script.
Jeremy Vine... He's shocking as a question master and not a patch on Dermot,
He's not as bad as he was - perhaps he took note of some of the criticism?

Showed his ignorance yesterday when discussing the SI unit of magnetic flux and asking if Weber's first name was Simon.

As were many of us on the EH threads who hated him. Good riddance. He was losing so much towards the end anyway, it looked like he didn't care anymore.
Will he ever stop saying 'tremendous knowledge'?
Think that's well and truly stuck alandanex
What about "Tremendous Teeth Daphne"?
As I expected, I'm finding the programme rather dull without CJ - for me, one of the most enjoyable things was hoping that he would lose his head to head. Perhaps it has run its course. I know that it's early days, but I don't think that Dave has displayed 'tremendous knowledge' because a lot of his answers have been educated guesses.

What! He gave up the glamour of being a Egghead for The Pirates of Penzance - 'Book early to avoid disappointment' - in Romford....
Might be fun David!!

Lucky you, you've got CJ back in another series from 2008. The way the schedulers are acting he'll probably still be around in five years time. They seem to love interspersing a new series with old repeats.
Strange that they have gone back to repeats so soon after the start of a new series.

I was watching a programme(can't remember what it was about) a while ago and there was a clip of The Sale of the Century(Quiz of the Week, from Norwich),and there was a lady contestant in the clip.I thought she looks familiar,my wife sussed her though,it was Daphne looking very young.
She's been around for years.

wasnt Daphne a winner on 15..to 1 many years ago as well ?
Stop calling him "Tremendous knowledge Dave", it is silly and will be annoying to other members especially Kevin. Only an arrogant prat would allow themselves to be called such a vainglorious title. Kevin is miles better than any of them. Judith is a token average person but looks good and is the but of much humour.
Daphne has been around for years and has been on Sale of the Century so she should be good at what she does, if only she wasn't so damn irritating!
Yes agree Kevin is better than any of them, he's a gentleman who doesn't have any edge to him, unlike Barry who has taken a leaf out of Daphne's book and feels the need to gesticulate when anyone is pondering the answer!
Judith and Chris are lovely both have a dry sense of humour.

Pat's lengthy answers to prove how much he knows are very annoying
I think the most interesting part of the programme IS when the Eggheads think aloud and you get an an insight into the way their brains work. Their ability to guess better than the challengers is often, it seems to me, just as important as their knowledge. I enjoy their little tricks such as go for the Pacific if it's one of the options; if there is only one option you have heard of, go for that. I like Kevin's talk about "percentages". Very rarely do the Eggheads make a wild guess. They're always looking for clues in the question, making logical inferences, eliminating unlikely options.
So, carry on Pat. When you're stumped, take your time, think aloud, keep your answers lengthy.
Daphne could do with giving us a more detailed commentary on how she comes up with her brilliant guesses.

I think Daphne pretends to guess... she knows the answer but doesnt want to be accused of being smug llo.l. as she has been on here so many times.....
but it doesnt work with me.. she still looks smug .....
Ditto Victoria.
I agree that it is interesting when the Eggheads think aloud - it is often their knowledge of dates which leads them to the correct answer (Kevin's knowledge of dates is awesome). But I find it annoying when they know the right answer immediately and yet talk at length about the other two answers to show how much they know (Pat is the worst offender)

I'm glad that someone else quite liked CJ - I'm sure that, having gained a reputation for being a big head (rather than an egg head) he just kept up the act tongue in cheek. I found him quyite amusing, particularly his interaction with Daphne (who incidently is lovely). It is obvious that the BBC made no mention of him leaving so that they could carry on using VERY old repeats. I think it is a bit of an insult that no mention was made of him leaving as he had been part of the show since the beginning - how would you like to leave a job without any acknowledgement?
Surely, now that he has left, it would be better to only show repeats where he doesn't appear, or does the BBC think only old fogies watch the show and won't notice!
In the current edition of Radio TImes, somebody has asked what has happened to CJ and why there was no mention of him leaving. The answer given is that he left between blocks of filming and there was no opportunity to mention it (they also say that he didn't want any fuss). I imagine that he may prefer not to appear in the repeats if he is trying to make a new career but the problem with leaving out his episodes would be that the amount of money would not follow on from the previous day.

I like the new member of the Eggheads and I will not miss C.J. at all, I think his facial expressions when others are answering questions to be very offensive. He thinks he knows everything when in fact he does not do as well as the others in my opinion.
You have to admit though that he added a bit of entertainment value...
I'm new to Eggheads and just wondered if Fred Housgo was ever asked to go on Eggheads?
No I don't think Fred has ever been on the team, though not sure if he was ever asked.

I am beginning to dislike Dave merely because he is introduced at every verse end with the epithet, "Tremendous Knowledge". If he had anything about him he would ask for it to stop.
Apart from sounding silly it's mildly offensive to others on the team who, if their success in the quizzing world are anything to go by, are far more knowledgeable than he is.
I knew that CJ was leaving the show but was rather surprised that this was not mentioned in what was presumably his final appearance on Wednesday.
I suppose to show their austerity BBC decided that cracking open champagne and throwing a glad-to-see-the-back-of-you party would not be appropriate.
Ever since I had the misfortune of visiting CJ narcisstitical webpage he has induced forcible ejection of contents of my stomach whenever I have seen him. Trajectories were even more pronounced when he wore his Alice band....
Aliceband...........
Still doing it.
What about a message board outing to Romford??? I need to see CJ in Pirates of Penzance to believe it!!
CJ is now playing the Beast in Beauty and the Beast at the Shaw Theatre in London.
Agree with all of the comments about the Tremendous Knowledge nickname - it is spoiling the programme for me
