Let's look at this sentence and please tell me where the mistake is:

Were we suggested to merge with that company, the idea should be rejected.

“Were we suggested to merge with that company, the idea should be rejected.”

Good question. If the need be, some companies hire investment bankers to “explore strategic alternatives”. I can very well imagine that his statement could be heard in any boardroom. In common parlance the sentence is acceptable. However, I don’t like the construction where, in this particular case, ‘suggested’ is followed by the infinitive ‘to merge’.

With ‘suggested’ here, one expects a clause in the subjunctive to follow, e.g.:

“Were it suggested THAT we merge with that company, -----, OR,

“Were it suggested that we consider merging with that company --------“

The’ issue’ is suggested, not ‘we’ in this case.

‘should’, ‘would’, and ‘will’ will all work here, but with slightly different meanings.

Thanks, Robert for pieces of advice!

The sentence is in a testpaper where the task is to find the incorrect one. I didn't think it was wrong. In addition I couldn't find out what the problem was.

As I read your comment the sentence could make trouble even for a native speaker because its construction is too complicated. The worst it is that this grammar test can make me think I'm absolutely stupid...

    Now if you write this:

"Were we suggested AS a merger candidate, then ------",

    this would be fine.

You are right; it's complicated for a native. Don't get the idea you're stupid, you're not.
