hey,
im in year 8 and dont worry you will get the hang of algebra i get confuzed sometimes too!
just link up all the numbers, then the letters and add or subtract as normal.
when doing sums always follow bidmas
brackets
indices (to the power of) etc 2squared
divide
multiply
subtract

Hope this Helps

Algebra is really easy Im in year 8 and I got a level 6a for my Algebra test.
6 + y= You just put an imaginary '1' in front of the 'y' and you just add 6 and the imaginary 1. So your answer would be 7, and don't forget the 'y'. So Your final answer would be 7y.
Multiplying Algebra:
5a x 4y= You times the numbers without the letters first, so 20. Then you put 'a' and 'y' in alphabetical order to put after 20. So your final answer is 20ay.
Subtracting Algebra:
You just basically do the opposite to Adding.
Diving Algebra:
You just do the opposite to Multiplying.
If you still don't understand what I told you in your secondary school you should have posters around with MyMaths username and password. If you go onto MyMaths then put your school's username and password then You would understand Algebra more....

P.s. Hope That Helped You <3

To start off, what type of algebra are you struggling with? One great place to check out it KS3 bitesize, it can teach you the main ways of doing it. I think you should really check it out

The easiest way to find an algebraic expression(eg. 3y=8y+8) is to get all the letters on one side. For example (This is from the test paper 2009 tier 5-7 maths)
Look at these equations:

11=6+a 11=6+a
a+7=10+b

Find the value of b.
First you have to work out a so you get all in one side. 11-6=6-6+a. 11-6=5 and 6-6=0 so 5=a.Now you know what a is so you applie it to a+7=10+b so it becomes 5+7=10+b. You have to add 5+7 and that equals 12. The algebraic equation becomes now 12=10+b so b must equal 2.

Hope I've helped, Omni

PS: Sorry if I took long time to explain, I'm english 3rd!

hi, i am in year 8, it doesn't really matter what you do in year 7, you will probarbly stay around the set that you are in now. [Personal details removed by Moderator] i am in top set for everything, but not so good at spelling!. here's some tips on general algebra:
. x is just a missing number, not anything to get confused about, it could even be a p!
. Just stay focused, i was just studdying it and had completely forgotten, take a break for 5 minutes to ease you mind!
. Algebra is used everywhere if you cannot find the length of something or something like that, as i said before, it is just a number you don't know, it is easy to work out usualy, just like in primary school when you had to work out a number like jimmy times this to get that, it is almost like that when the x is that number

lol, well it is quite simple really.... btw: i go grammar so this is probably right, but im not certain butttt:
(8+y)-2 is quite simple
firstly you look at what kind if signs are in the equition (in this case + and -)
so you know BIDMASS is ok, so then you dont need brakets at all so you can write it as 8+y-2
then you can re-phrase it to say
y+8-2
so it is y+6

there ou go your answer would be y+6 if you quistion was to simplify it.

remember right, check out the BIDMASS part of the equition to help you know what you are dealing with.

Hey, my name's Nadia, and- like you- im not the best at algebra, although im the cleverest girl in year six in my class, i only know how to do simple equations. I think what you should do is to start with simple equations, then slowly and steadily move on, and also on the statements, try to use the info your given, and work logically, but always make sure you check and work at a fine pace. Hope this helps, lots of love, Nadia.

In a way, algerba goes like this:

If Z is worth 4 and A is worth 2...

2z + 3a

Remember: Z is worth 4. Two fours are eight.

8 + 3a

Remember: A is worth 2. Three twos are six.

8+6= 14.

Hi, I'm in year 8 now but I found algebra hard at first. It's perfectly normal your not alone! If you have notes try and re-read them and try out some questions. You could always use the website to help you or get your parent(s) to get you some help books (such as letts books) which are quite cheap from book stores or amazon or your library. Year 7 is the perfect time to master those problems because once you get to year 8 & 9 you build those skills up, for example you start looking at algebra on lines. Hope this helps! Nicola xx

calm down!
if the letter comes before the number (e.g n3) it's add! so when the letter comes after the number (e.g 3n) it's times!
hope it helps it's a good thing to remember! (sorry if you already know this i'm only in yr6!)

Right lest just say you have a question saying

What is a+a=

All you do is add them ( you think it's sooo hard but you over think it!)

So it's like 1+1 = 2

If there is a+a= 2a because all your spdoing is adding them together.

S that means

3a+a= 4a
And
4a+2a= 6a

So it's just like saying a or what ever number they are using is 1. But it's different for x ing

Do you understand it?!

Here do these questions!

2a+a=
2y+2y=
4x+2x=

3a
4y
6x

Now sometimes you might get this:

2y+4x+3y+2x=

Now that looks confusing right? Bt it really isn't! All you have to do is look for like terms. And like terms are we're you need ot group the same letter together e.g

2y+4x+3y+2x=
--- ---

( what is underlines is like terms. They oth have Y in them)

So we would write that
2y+3y

But then you are left with two other numbers. They both have x's in them so you out that like this

4x+2x=

Here is the answer to that question!

2y+3y=5y
---
4x+2x=6x
---

I ole his helped you! If you need any more help or you don't understand it then I will help you!!

I'm a year six - top set - and even I get algerbra.
Basically, you just use letters instead of numbers. For example:

1 Y = 10. What's 3 Y plus 1 N (N = 11). Simple, 41.

Algebra is basically a code for what a number really is e.g

2y+5=10

This is a very easy one. we know that something must be added to 5 to make 10. in this case, we know 2y is 5, therefore your answer would be:

Y=2.5

Hi, Well Algebra looks hard but it is quite easy . Im going to give you an explanation of algebra an easy one .Before you start working on equations be sure that adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, decimals, and fractions are not difficult for you. If you need to go back and review any of the above that you are unsure of.
Example:
An Equal Sign means that one side is equal to the other.

15 = 7 + 8

7 + 8 = 15

Numbers or variables - it doesn't make any difference.

w + 5 = 14

14 = w + 5

You can move the constant (number) from one side of the equal sign to the other as long as whatever you do to one side you do to the other. Using the below equation to practice.
w + 5 = 14 (you want the variable to be all alone so you need to subtract 5 from each side

-5 = - 5 (what you do to one of an equation you do to the other)

w = 9
C - 3 = 7

+3 = 3

C = 10

Did you notice that once the equation was set up with the variables on one side and the numbers on the other, it was much easier to solve?

Do not get into the habit of solving the equations in your head - try and understand what is happening.
