I am doing about Shakespeare at the moment, in my English lessons. I really dont understand all the different language, as its Old English. If you reply to this and please do, can you answer some useful questions/answers for me please:

1. Name at least 3 plays written by Shakespeare.

2.Name a play you throughly enjoy.

3. Do you find Old English language hard to catch on to? Eg - Thee,Thy, Thou and so on,,,,,

I have just finished watching Romeo And Juliet in my Englsh Lessons. I sort of understood it, by watching it but it would be nice to find out what they said in our speech. I only reallly liked it because Leonardo Dicaprio was ROMEO!
HA HA HA

Yes, please answer my questions/statements, it will be much appreciated.
And also if you need any advice on anything please message me and i can help you in any subject.
Always here to help!
x

Hi U14048751,

1 - Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream

2 - Do you mean a Shakespearean play? I like Othello, thought I haven't seen it performed yet, only read it.

3 - Yes. But the more you read it, the more you get used to it. It can be really tough to get into at first. I find it easier not to worry about what each word means, and to try and get a sense of what's being said. I also found it easier to understand when it's spoken (hardly surprising for a play which was meant to be read out loud!) than when you read it. There are film versions of a lot of Shakespeare's plays and they are very useful if you get confused by the plot.

KS3 Bitesize has summaries for Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest:
www.bbc.co.uk/school...

And also some analysis of set scenes:
www.bbc.co.uk/school...

GCSE Bitesize has just added some videos about two of Shakespeare's plays - Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, and Macbath. If you're studying any of those plays, why not take a look and see if they are helpful?

Macbeth:
www.bbc.co.uk/school...

The Merchant of Venice
www.bbc.co.uk/school...

Romeo and Juliet
www.bbc.co.uk/school...

Click the video link to view them.

I hope this helps!

1. Othello, Romeo and Juliette, Henry 5th, Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, A midsummers night dream.

2. I enjoy Romeo and Juliette, therefore it is one of the most popular of all Shakespere's plays. It is an original and easy to understand if you watch some of the cartoon verions on youtube, they are split up into scenese so they're easy enough to understand.

3. Most of the words are in place of 'the'. Thou you my readers, thee.
Just revise :P

Good Luck.

1 - The Multiminios
Macbeth
The Comedy of Errors

2 - Macbeth

3 - Yes. It IS very hard to understand.

I recomend the Book: William Shakespeare "The Complete Works" Compact Edition. General editors: Stanley Wells and Gary Taylor. This book has a glossary for those arcaic vocabularies. There is also a dictionary, but I do not know the name. Sorry

As they shook I did look,
But her fair did impair
All my senses
As amazed, I gazed
On more than a mortal complexion.
You that love can prove
Such force in Beauty´s inflection.

Always at your disposal

Shakespeare

I'm currently reading Macbeth in my third year English class - I'm from Scotland by the way, so I'm a bit confused about Year 7, Year 8 etc lol. I quite like Macbeth as it's about Scotland and my English teacher is very good at helping us to understand the language used. We're also watching the movie of Macbeth and that helps us to grasp the plot better. But the language is quite complicated but luckily I'm beginning to get used to it now biggrin But apart from the language, Shakespeare's plays are surprisingly good winkeye
