The "Subscribe to future episodes" FAQ has been updated today 20/04/2011 at 10:59.

The information that the function was not currently available has been removed and new instructions on how to subscribe have been added. FAQ here iplayerhelp.external...

As far as I can tell, using IE9 and Opera, this is still not working via either method suggested. However badly synchronised publication of announcement with availability has occurred before.

At least with the old FAQ the answers to the inevitable questions were easy. Now smiley - shrug and smiley - run

    UPDATE to UPDATE

The install failed on Windows Vista because there is already an existing working version installed.

Many people will have no wish to remove a working (most do work despite the posts here) version in the hope of a limited additional functionality and risk their downloaded programmes.

Coffee, chocolate or a stiff drink? No I think I will leave it.

    FURTHER UPDATE

At last already installed versions of iPlayer desktop are showing a download new version button.

The update appear to work in so far as downloading now is concerned still works. No existing downloads were lost (however a full back-up copy is still wise). One notionally removed programme was resurrected which I assume was due to my careless deletion while it was still the current playing programme.

Programmes in the course of downloading are showing in the "coming soon" and "A-Z" tabs but not in "available now" or the expiring listing as was the previous situation. As soon as the programme has finished downloading it appears automatically.

The preferences show that it is intended that future updates can be scheduled to take place between set times 00:00-06:59 or 07:00-17:59 or 18:00-23:59 as well as any-time when new episodes become available.

There may be undocumented features that will surprise us as time goes by. So keep doing the back-ups.

Not sure you're right about the scheduling of 'future updates' you mean 'future episodes', right? I'm taking this to mean that programmes that are 'subscribed' to will only download in those time periods.

Correct on the assumption that it was "future episodes", a typo despite previewing the post.

I'm taking this to mean that programmes that are 'subscribed' to will only download in those time periods.

If the scheduling option works like that will become clear over the next six hours. Of course one of the options is "any-time" which will need a separate test.

I had my first scheduled download today and it all went fine.

Very pleased overall with the update. Layout will take getting used to and I do notice a more pixellated picture.

But happy scheduled downloads is live and using i Player via netbook I have always had view issues- now it works perfectly, can access control bar during full screen playback and a click of the resize button has it back to a small square screen.
