The iplayer website for iphone can stream video to the Apple TV, but for this to happen airplay has to be enabled in the html source code of the iplayer for iphone website.

Details of how this can be implemented can be found at this link.

The link is broken, heres a paste of the text from the Apple dev site:

For web-based content, you can enable AirPlay Video in the QuickTime Plug-in or HTML5 video element as follows:

    QTPlug-in:
    airplay="allow"
    airplay="deny" (Default)
    For example:
    HTML5 video element:
    x-webkit-airplay="allow"
    x-webkit-airplay="deny" (Default)
    For example:

    Hi

Ok for non tech peeps (ME) what does this mean?

Is this something I will need to do to enable airplay? Or is it something BBC are on with?

Couldnt believe it didnt work last night after update! Thought this would have been a priority as it will be brilliant!

I am really disappointed that I still cannot get iPlayer on my iPhone 4 to play over Airplay to my Apple TV. As before I can get sound but no picture.

Now beginning to regret having bought the ATV2

This means that the BBC need to add the small section of code airplay="allow" to their site for it to work. This might be a little work or it might be a lot, it depends how it's built.

Lets just hope that they implement it soon or even better are in discussions with Apple to get iPlayer natively on the Apple TV.

Four hours have expired and they have not done it yet. Maybe they are working on the iplayer App for iPhone which is promised - that would be as good as a native Apple TV system. Most people will operate Apple TV via their iPhone as they have probably lost the minuscule control.

I too was disappointed when the Apple upgrade this week did not enable iplayer video streaming over airplay.

I'd like to add another vote for the BBC to make this apparently small change to its iplayer content to enable the content to be streamed from iphone/itouch to atv2 using airplay.

    Here's hoping...

I'm a web developer and can confirm that this is a small change for the iPlayer website.

Please BBC, add the extra HTML or tell us why you won't.

I think AirPlay would be a very useful addition to the iPlayer web app. I hope this is added sooner rather than later.

I hope the tough issue of rights does not get in the way of the BBC implementing Airplay. I for one do not agree that 'copyright' means you have also 'deviceright', i.e. the right to restrict one to viewing content on a specific platform...

Yep - another one here. I guess if there's an overseas-friendly subscriber app being developed for release later this year (www.guardian.co.uk/m..., then airplay would be part of that. I guess the issue is that what looks OK on an iphone or iPad won't look so good on a TV, which means that the non-flash streams will need to be improved.

Whatever the case, it would be good to get the functionality soon, BBC!

Another voice to the mix. I'd love to see this. Although the quality may not be up to HD tv scratch, I would be happy to see AirPlay even at the current quality level (my broadband wouldn't provide a reliable enough a service for better than iPad quality anyway).

    Bump!

I really hope the BBC get their act together and make the changes necessary for video AirPlay to work for iPhones and ATV2s. Or at the very least explain their rationale for not doing so.

I pay for a TV license, and have an ATV2 and an XBox360, and *still* have no straighforward way of getting iPlayer onto my TV. Infuriating.

It shouldn't. It is already the case that I can play iPlayer content on my television using the Component Cable adapter. (Though, intriguingly, this only works streaming from the Web Site, not using the App.).

Similarly, I assume that there will be no problem using the announced HDMI "mirroring" Cable.

So, the issue of limiting iPlayer to certain devices shouldn't really come into it (else it would have been prevented previously).

I don't have an ATV2 to confirm if this works, but can anyone on this thread with all the necessary hardware confirm if the bookmarklet described at:

    jamesclarke.net/note...

allows the iPlayer to be airplayed to the ATV2?

No, it doesn't work unfortunately - the iPhone gives you the option to send the video to your ATV box, but when you do that, the ATV just says "An error occurred loading this content".

If it is as simple as just applying a few lines of code provided by Apple to the iPlayer website, what's all the fuss about? Why not just do it...now?

    Anyone listening?

Please add this function soon was the main reason for purchasing apple tv, as I assumed this function would work. Perhaps reply / comment from someone at BBC would at least give us feel for timecale or potential.

This needs to be added as a priority.

iPlayer can be played on the Apple TV2 but only if the device is jailbroken to run one of the latest nightly builds of XBMC and the iPlayer plugin is installed. Another method is to jailbreak the device and install Plex which can stream iPlayer and other on demand services from a Plex server running on your PC/Mac.

I could do the things above but I don't want to; I'd rather have an authorised and supported iPlayer app than a hack that might invalidate my warranty. I want an Apple TV but until iPlayer is available on it, I won't bother buying one. A PS3 would be a more useful buy.
