    Hi,

Thanks for your feedback on the iPlayer ipad app. We have collected your responses and we have been looking into the issues which you have reported.

There seems to be a couple of different threads on this subject so it would be good if everyone can respond in this thread so that we don’t have multiple threads on the same issue. This will ensure that we are able to collect everyone’s responses and no one is missed.

To progress with our investigation we need to collect some more technical information. If you are having a problem with the iPlayer app can you please provide us with the following information –

    Your iPad and Your Connection

    • what Apple iPad software version are you using - iOS 3.1, 4.1 or 4.2
    • who is your internet service provider (ISP) and what wi-fi signal strength do you get in MB. Does your wi-fi signal strength go up and down ?
    • What wi-fi router do you have ? Can you play programmes if you connect to a different wi-fi router ?

    BBC iPlayer iPad App

    • which programme or programmes are failing to load ? Do both radio and TV programmes fail to play or just TV programmes
    • what message are you seeing when a programme does not play
    • can you check to see if you can play a programme that fails to load in the app on the BBC iPlayer website on the iPad. To do this go to www.bbc.co.uk/iplaye... on your iPad, find the programme that won't load in the app and see if you can play it.
    • can you play any programmes in the BBC iPlayer iPad app - do programmes play some of the time or have you never been able to play a programme using the app
    • How many attempts are do you making to play a particular programme - if you re-try the programme or re-install the app does the programme eventually play ?
    • Do longer programmes fail to play and shorter programmes play ok ? E.g. try a 2 hour film vs a 10 minute Children's programme

    Thanks

Hello, I installed the I-pad app on Monday, and none of the shows i tried viewing worked from the beginning. Below is a list of everything requested:

    Apple software: 4.2.1
ISP: Sky at Home, BT at work (doest work at Either)
Signal strength is very strong at both locations, not sure how to check the signal strength on the Ipad. speed of Internet at home is Max 8gb, at Work Max 6gb

    BBC Content:
All programs fail to load. Top gear, Qi, Shaun the sheep, Natural world, Cricket, story ville. Live TV work OK (BBC1)
No radio playlists work, but Live radio Work fine. (radio 2)
Notification: Failed to load program, please try again later
Natural Planet worked by playing through the webpage on the ipad.
On the app, no matter how many times you try re-loading, they all fail. Even re-installing the app there is no change.
As i can use the Iplayer through safari, this will be ok. But it will be nice to get the app working correctly.
    Thank you.

    Hi,

I can view live channels fine but can't play any shows from the home tab. I've tried a really wide range of shows and they all come up with a failed to load message please try later. I can view the shows on the website.

    Running iOS 4.2
ISP provider is talk talk, single strength is consistent and strong
    Router is linksys

Hope you get it sorted because the live channels work really well and I can see that the app could be great.

    Hello,

I'm having similar problems to the other posters:

    1. No recorded shows play ( fails with a "Fail to download at this time or similar message" ).
    2. BBC Live channels do play.
    3. ISP BT, Router Vigor 2700n, 28Gb free on iPad, OS 4.2
    4. Using the web interface recorded programs play if I use normal view quality, I don't seem to have this option wi iPad app.
    5. 3 Full strength wifi bars.

IPlayer app was installed on day of release. Initially some programmes would load, some wouldn't. The same message, "Failed to load programme; please try again later", keeps coming up.

More recently I have not been able to access any of the archived programmes; I have tried a variety of programmes with different runtimes. Multiple attempts on the same programme have also resulted in no joy. Live streaming, incidentally, does work perfectly.

The app has been deleted and reinstalled, again with no success.

I have tried the web version of iPlayer on Safari and Atomic Web Browser with no problems whatsoever, so it does not appear to be a problem with the Internet connection, router or wifi connection. I have tried the same programme on Safari, Atomic and the app; it always fails to load on the app.

For the record my ISP is Madasafish with an average download speed of 175-200 kB/s. Not great, but I always use the Normal setting for video quality (as stated above the web based iPlayer works fine; on the Normal setting). Router is a Netgear model and wifi strength is at maximum.

My iPad's software is up to date; 4.2.1.

I'm running iOS 4.2 on an ipad
    MY ISP is BT
I have two routers, a Belkin 54G and a Linksys WAG160N. The Belkin connects directly to the Internet and the Linksys is daisy chained to the Belkin to extend WiFi into the garden.
WiFi signal is rock solid from both routers when in range.

All programmes, radio and TV play on my Macbook Pro and my iPhone.
Using the app, the iPad played radio and TV until early this week (6/3/2011). Now it plays radio, which is slow to start, but all TV programmes, regardless of size, fail with the message "Programme failed to load, please try again later". This happens whichever router it's connected to. I've tried 3-4 times, failing every time.

All programmes, radio and TV play on the iPad in the Safari browser.

I've rebooted both routers and the iPad. Results are still the same.

    I hope this is helpful

When trying to watch "Brideshead Revisited" on iPad iPlayer App, you get the loading icon (circle of dots rotating), then after a while it says "Failed to load programme; please try again later." This has happened for over 24 hours.

    - iOS 4.2.1 (8c148)
    - TalkTalk, not sure what signal strength, but everything else works
    - Netgear router connected to AirPort Express via ethernet
    - All other programmes work
    - Have tried via Safari too and it says "Not available on this yet"

    Hi

I'm having the same issues. Iplayer works fine on my iPhone but I've had trouble with it on my iPad since I got it about 3 weeks ago.

Using sky broadband, signal strength is full and consistant. Just did a speed test online and download speed was 0.29mbps. (don't know anything about that but just repeated what was shown to me!)

Software is up to date, iOS 4.2.1

Seeing the same message as most- "failed to load, please try again later"

Also just tried using iplayer through safari and the same thing happened.

I can't play any programmed on my iPad, yet the same programmes will play on my iPhone app (same network connection) and on iPad via Safari.

The iPad app HAS worked for me in the past -and it's great when it does- but I've tried it multiple times over the last few days with different material but always with the same results as mentioned above.

Although other posts are pre4.3, could the new iOS update be causing problems here?

I MAY HAVE A SOLUTION FOR YOU...

    Hi everyone,

I realise this thread is primarily for reporting our experiences, which I will also do, but more importantly I might have a possible solution for some of you.

I'm using the latest iOS on a 1st gen 64GB 3G & WiFi iPad, which I had been using quite happily for about a week or so since first installing it.

I'm using 20Mb Virgin Cable Broadband and have excellent WiFi reception, using a Vigor 2900V router.

Then a day or two ago I suddenly found that I could no longer view any TV programmes using the BBC iPlayer iPad application...always just getting the spinning hourglass and the "program failed to load message".

Note however that I could still use iPlayer quite happily on my PC normally, and could also get a somewhat interrupted service using the website on my iPad, with fairly frequent pauses for rebuffering. Also, I noticed that I could still successfully listen to the Radio using the iPad application.

Having done some online research and coming across another website, someone suggested they'd solved the problem by changing their DNS Server setting on the iPad (under Settings -> WiFi -> [your-network-name] -> DHCP -> DNS). I'd previously had it using the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220), and instead changed it, as per the recommendation on this other site to 8.8.8.8 which is Google's own public DNS server....and Hey Presto, everything's fine again!

I'm somewhat at a loss as to explain why my PC - which is still using the OpenDNS DNS servers - is able to run the iPlayer app quite happily, whilst my iPad using the same settings isn't. But what I can confirm is that, without any shadow of a doubt, changing the DNS Server setting on my iPad definitely solves the problem for me....and therefore may be of help to some for you...

    Spike.

A NOTE TO THE BBC MODERATORS: this point about the DNS Server making a difference on the PC iPlayer app vs the iPad app, seems worth investigating. Do the apps work in different ways that could be affected by the DNS Servers?

Oh sorry, one more very important thing I forget to mention:

You must remember to click the big "RENEW LEASE" button, just under where you've changed the DNS Server settings, in order to apply the changes before testing it again.

    Hi,

I have not been able to watch a single TV programme (either live or using the catch up service) using the iPad iPlayer App. Radio seems to work though (both live and catch up).

The error message I see is always "Failed to load programme; please try again later."

I am able to start watching iPlayer on the iPad using the Safari browser over the same wifi/internet connection (Draytek 2820n ADSL router, BT internet ISP), however, it streams for 5-30 seconds before getting the spinning circle (I guess it's trying to buffer), and just hangs there indefinitely. On a normal computer using the same wifi connection, iPlayer plays fine with no stutters (I guess it's using the flash version).

    Requested info:
    Apple iPad software - 4.3.1

ISP - BT internet (ADSL connected @ 8128KB download, 448KB upload). Normal download speeds when downloading to desktop on iPlayer normally yield download rates between 600Kb/s-1.1Mb/s - So theoretically, the bandwidth should be there...

wifi - using wireless n, signal strength excellent throughout my house.

    Regards,
    PP

    Hi Team,
iPad 2, running iOS 4.3.3 (London NW11) UK
Mobile ISP; (THREE) using there MiFi, average Mb rate 3.5mbps

I just bought the new iPad 2 and Apple at Covent Garden downloaded your BBC iPlayer from iTunes for iPad.

I can't play anything because it just says (connect to WiFi) network and I look at my MiFi device and it's not on 3G and says (H) which is saying it's connected to it's WiFi.

I've called THREE several times and they said it's not a problem at there end and said it must be either the iPad or BBC.

Just as a test I used my iPhone 4 next to me and your iPlayer works great on the iPhone, Can you please help as I'd really like to watch BBC on my iPad.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
    Yours sincerely Duncan

3 of us with iPad2 also cannot connect to iPlayer thru the App.

I installed the I-pad App last week, and none of the shows i tried viewing worked at all except one food program..
Even connecting thru website programmes frequently buffer and given time they still start and stop
Below is a list of everything requested:

    Apple software: 4.3.3 (8J2)
ISP: Sky at Home, TalkInternet at work (doest work at Either)
Signal strength is very good at both locations, .
Actual speed of Internet at home is Max 1.66Mbps which I thought was part of the problem (but my old laptop (pc) works), but at Work we are getting 9.06Mbps and still does not load thru App and still buffers via web.

    BBC Content:
Nearly all programs fail to load. . Live TV and radio work OK
Notification: Failed to load program, please try again later
    .
On the app, tried re-loading but still fail. Even re-installing the app there is no change.
Hope you can get the app and website working correctly for iPad2
    Thank you.

    • Apple iPad software version 4.3.2
    • ISP: TalkTalk. Signal strength seems steady.
    • Cisco Linksys. Problem goes away when using old D-Link router.

    BBC iPlayer iPad App

    • All TV programmes fail. Radio programmes load OK.
    • Message is "Failed to load program, please try again later"
    • Website version fails too
    • Retrying/shorter programmes doesn't help.
    • Changing DNS servers doesn't help.
    • I can play programmes using the PC version of iPlayer, or the iPhone. It's just iPad that fails.

My theory is that this may be associated with the MTU size on the wireless network. TalkTalk has a low MTU size of 1432, which I have configured on the ADSL connection. I remember doing something quite hacky a while ago with my old D-Link router to get it to play nicely wrt MTU size. My Linksys router doesn't give me a way to configure the MTU on the wireless network.

[The reason I'm trying to use the Linksys router instead of the D-Link is that my Vista PC keeps dropping the wireless connection to the D-Link after about 100Mb of data transfer. Any thoughts about that gratefully received!]

    Same problem here:

    Ipad2 / iOS4.3.3

All archived content, radio and TV, fails to load. Live streams seem to work fine.

ISP is PlusNet, router/modem is LinkSys/Cisco.

Seems to me that I'm having the same problem as everyone else, tried changing settings as advised above, that did not work for me. Where do I get this 40D, I've tried searching for it in app store but came up with a blank?

Sky broadband 20mb connection with wireless router supplied by Sky
Usually yet two bars signal strength on iPad fairly consistent
Visited a friend and connected on his router and the app worked
In DHCP settings my ip address is 192.168.0.3, router and DNS both set to 192.168.0.1 by default.

Unable to watch live TV or any other program, but radio has worked on occasion. Failed to load, try again later
Programs will load on iplayer website through safari
Seems to fail no matter how many times i try, reinstalled app but
no effect, doesn't matter how long the tv show is

Not good enough. All attempts to use iPlayfr on iPad result in freezing and nned to start all over. You have to sort this out. Where is BBC contribution to this thread?
