Since iplayer was intorduced as the default player for radio 4 listen again content I get regular interruptions to the stream (not buffering delays). Content just stops for vaying length of time.
Alternative player (e.g. Big Bang archive) doesn't suffer from this. Nor did Real Player when that was offered as an option.
I use HomePlug mains connections for my home network and this problem happens when I am using the running machine.
    Q. Is the iPlayer protocol more sensetive to electrical interferance than alternatives?

The options to play are here:

I would imagine that using the default Windows player requires more bandwidth than RealPlayer if that's what your question means. If you click on the links in the FAQ you'll find out how to play using RP if that's more reliable on your home network.

Thanks for the quick response. I had assumed that the Big Bang Archive used a different player because it doesn't open a new window. It is very clear however that this player does not stop and the other one that pops up (e.g. for the new quiz) does.
I have now downlaoded RealOne to see if that makes any difference.
    Q. can you choose which player to use?
    Q. what is the file suffix (I need to configure Real to play particular file types.)

The above FAQ explains how to play RP if you're just being offered the iPlayer default. You have to pretend to be on dial-up and it switches the default player to RP.

Alternatively if you want to listen to live radio you can visit the Real Music webpage and play the BBC live radio streams there.

I presume the suffix is 'ra', but I expect the status bar in RP will confirm it more precisely. You can increase the RP buffering to cope with networking problems.

I wouldn't count on Real Player being more reliable - I use it by default, being outside UK, and still have the problem of Listen Again programmes cutting out. It's been particularly bad since the latest 'upgrade' - I had to change my settings to get it at all (see here iplayerhelp.external... ) - but it still cuts out frequently.
