I have been listenening to radio 3 on the internet for years. Starting several days ago, the sound of live broadcasts has become very garbled. In contrast, if I listen to an old program the sound quality is fine. I live in California.

smiley - smiley Radio 3 works fine for me.
There is a possibility it could be a bbc problem if you hear distortion. You must then use the contact form, in addition to posting on the messageboard.
    (See BBC post www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb... {www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/F13735684?thread=7174727&skip=40#p90507664 ]
    & bbc FAQ iplayerhelp.external... {tech report] )

    It will also help
    - to post the Two Line Display info; from right clicking the player. (as mentioned in the above FAQ)
    - And also use the iPlayer diagnostics and report the results of the 5 speeds it reports. (again diagnostics mentioned in the above bbc post)

And not forgetting to give the usual basic information (as I list -->www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb... )

In all probability the problem will affect only some users. Unless you give more information there is very little anyone will be able to do.

The issues log iplayerhelp.external... is currently mentioning problems with on demand radio, but you are asking about Live Radio.
(see also adjacent thread about Radio 3 problems www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb... 'Insufficient bandwidth R3' )

Also in Finland Radio 3 sound has been garbled for at least 3 days. Please note that the Internet reception for Radio 4 has been OK all this time. Since there are problems in California, too, it is perhaps time for the BBC to react. Thank you!

I just recorded a few seconds of the garbled reception and can send it if it is helpful for you.

I appreciate Radio 3 very very much. Somehow the music you select so often has a quality that touches. I wonder how you do it.

This is just to add some technical details.
The header of the BBCPlayer is: www.bbc.co.uk/iplaye.... I was trying to listen to the live broadcast.

My operating system is Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, Firefox browser.
Please also note that the buttons of the Player do not work for my system; I cannot pause the reception, for instance but have to close the window.

    Thanks again.

    Hi liveonen,
OK for me in the uk, I have no distortion:
    url www.bbc.co.uk/iplaye...
    BBC Media Player v.2.22.15501.15796
    bbc_radio_three | 48kbps | aac | AK

    _distortion ? _
From the link I can see you are using a FlashPlayer stream.
The other technical details from right clicking on the player itself may also have helped as would your location isp and the set of iPlayer diagnostic results.
Did you send off a contact form ?

    _ buttons not working _
That is possibly a separate problem specific to your system.
Has this always been a problem with your installation ?
It may make sense to start a separate thread about that problem.
As a longshot you could try running firefox in safe mode www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb.... You of course may use different plugins to me as I use FF3.6 on Windows XP pro. Otherwise possibly consider reinstalls.

I am listening in Canada and have had the same problem since Feb. 10th: Radio 3 live is distorted, but Listen Again and other live BBC Radio stations are fine.

Mac Snow Leopard, Mozilla Firefox, tested connection speeds 4000

Great programming, hope you can fix this one soon!

I should also mention that the same distortion is heard when I attempt to listen with Safari rather than Firefox.

    Hello,
As others are reporting, live feeds from Radio 3 have been garbled for me as well since Wednesday morning. I'm in California, have made no changes to my system (Mac OS 10.5.8), no updates to my iPlayer, no hardware changes, etc. In short, there is nothing that I am aware of that has changed on my end, suggesting that it may be a BBC problem (at least with their US server?). I say this because I have successfully used iPlayer to listen to live steams from Radio 3 for the past year. Archived recording continue to play fine. Live recordings from Radio 3 are garbled whether I use Safari or Firefox.
Thanks for your help with this problem.

The more information given the better.

Whilst it could well be a BBC problem the BBC themselves ask you to report such problems with the contact forms, have any of you done that ?
(The contact form does at least encourage you to provide more information, and submissions are monitored continuously by the BBC)

Also as mentioned in the contact form faq; the additional information provided when you right click; is also asked for, because it gives additional information about the stream you are using.

Also and again asked for specifically by the BBC is the iPlayer diagnostic results (I think the tests specifically compare results from different BBC content providers), I have not noticed anyone posting that information.

Finally problems sometimes are noted on some ISPs and not others, so which ISPs are affected.

The problem possibly only affects a minority of Radio 3 users.

The users with problems have probably not yet provided the BBC with sufficient info for any specific problem to be identified and separated from many other unrelated problems producing similar symptoms.

I'm sorry that I'm not writing with a solution, but am relieved that other listeners seem to be experiencing the same garbled, fishy, underwater gargling quality to their radio reception over the internet.

This is a plea to the BBC; please please fix this problem hastily hastily. Radio 3 is a lifeline for me in Germany where I've been listening problem-free for years. Suddenly I go away for 4 days and when I come back - garbled fish!!

I'm a music student and an avid listener. Without Radio 3 I'm simply lost.

I hope something can be done - and soon.

    Best wishes
    Sue

This seems to be pretty pervasive with listeners outside the uk. I experience it using two different isps in Germany (in Munich and Frankfurt).

Here it only affects live streaming, downloads are ok (I was able to listen to last week's In Tune as a download).

I have a 16 Mbit DSL connection on an Intel iMac with Mac os X 10.6.

Sound quality is horrible for Radio 3 in Austria but Radio 4 is fine. As the other internet radios I have tried are OK it must be something with BBC.

    Please Help the BBC and other listners;
smiley - bluelight give full information
smiley - bluelight and use contact forms.

I hope some of the users are following the BBC recomendation to use contact forms instead of just posting here with incomplete information. (I am not sure I have noticed any user saying they have used the contact form, I certainly have not seen anyone quote the ticket number from their contact.)

No doubt thousands of overseas users have no problem with Radio 3 Listen Live. (Listen again / Audio On Demand problems may be part of a known issueiplayerhelp.external... )

See message #2 (www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb... ), as the BBC has not mentioned this as a known issue, presumably they are not aware of a Radio3 Listen Live problem affecting most overseas users. The bbc may remain unaware of this problem unless contact forms are used and more information is provided.

Windows; or even RealPlayer - soon to cease; streams could be tried meanwhile as an alternative.

at least wre know someone used a contact form.

I wonder if the BBC reply of 12th Feb was only aknowledging problems with On Demand Radio 3. Maybe we will get more information when the working week starts on Monday 15th.

R3 live is garbled in France too.
As well as filling in a contact form (done!) I've also emailed my favourite R3 programme - maybe worth everyone doing so to help get the (hopeful) R3 fix up and running ASAP
