I am located in Switzerland and listen frequently to BBC Radio 3. However the quality of the stream is too low (only 44Kbps). On the other hand another UK radio station, Classif FM has a stream of 128Kbps. Why can't the BBC offer the same quality level to its abroad listeners?
Hi Jean-Francois,
I think the bbc says somewhere it is due to cost constraints. I suppose you could think yourself lucky BBC streams Radio on iPlayer outside the UK.
Another consideration is possibly that some overseas listeners have slower connections than in the UK and would be more likely to encounter problems with the higher speeds.

I live in the States ... I don't consider myself lucky ... however, the bitrate for Radio5Live International is even lower at 32kbs.
It seems strange that while many very small UK radio stations, of what one would assume of limited resources, can provide unprocessed, uncompressed audio streams of hifi quality the BBC not able to do so.
I'd be interested to know what percentage of the BBC's resources are used by an internet radio stream compared to, say, an HD video stream on iPlayer.
And before anyone says it, I pay UK taxes and have a TV licence ...
Anyway, I'm glad John thinks we're lucky ... is that BBC policy?

Several statements purporting to be facts ...
Have you got it of your chest now?
How about a response from the BBC instead?
Thankyou.

Hi John! Thanks for your reaction. In fact I modestly consider myself lucky to at least capture BBC Radio 3... but I am just a more demanding customer! How comes that other public similar and even smaller radio stations in the UK or elsewhere are in an position to offer a better stream? Is it so costly to improve to 128 Kbps? This is the stream I am getting from eg. Denmark?

There have been a few threads about the bbc and providing services.
The BBC apparently is a rather odd organisation, and operates under rather a few unusual conditions, it is not, unlike (I presume) nearly all radio stations a company set up to make profit as it's primary objective. Indeed I think it would have problems in some cases if it tried to increase income.
As for some of the bbc comments about cost being a consideration I note 'joe_clip' has posted in some threads that the bbc have also commented on previously eg: www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...
and in another www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...

I'm still not clear under which hat John99 is writing? I'd just like to know if you represent BBC policy. I suspect no more than I do. I have no idea who you are.
I would like to compare the present situation to what the BBC have previously said. I mean, I know who James Cridland (the last respondent) is and his position in the BBC, but he's left for pastures new. Who are you?
John99, sorry if this has been raised before, but I'd still like to see a resource comparison between a 32kbps WMA audio feed and a HDTV video feed. Nor am I looking for a free ride. No doubt during your investigations into my postings you will have noted that I would be happy to pay a reasonable charge for access as would many other people. Let's face it, it's actually easy enough to circumvent the BBC's border controls anyway, but I'm not advocating that, just access to the BBC's superior programme material ... I mean, "Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation." Isn't that the point?
BTW: no apostrophe in "its" in its possessive sense. Just a tip

Just an ordinary poster like you, anything about bbc policy is what I recollect (correctly or not) from mb or blogs, John
