Hi, I've been a regular on the history messageboard, but I'm a real novice when it comes to researching my family tree.... My daughter asked me to find out more about our family history. And I don't know where to start! My grandfather's name was Charles St John, and he lived from 1899-1976. He lived most of his life in Paddington, and was a member of the Home Guard during WWII. He started life as a chauffer, and ended it as a shopkeeper. I'd really appreciate it, guys, if you could give me pointers as to where to start....

Hi , and welcome to the board , Since you are new to tis board you'll be in 'moderation for the first 20 posts , (BBC rules) but you may know that from the History message board , There is a thread called the Fernleaf , where you can post 'off topic' things and that'll get you through moderation quickly I found this birth ref from Free BMD www.freebmd.org.uk/c... which is probably your grandfather , on this you'll get your grandmothers maiden name , though you may know those details, . Births Sep 1899 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St John Charles Edgar B Croydon 2a 276

www.ancestry.co.uk/www.findmypast.com/h...both the above used for censuses and BMDs (births, marriages, deaths)- usually subscribe to one or the other www.freebmd.org.uk/www.genesreunited.co...{be careful about putting your tree on here, and letting people see it, show them a part, but it can be very good for contacts} www.familysearch.org...family tree programme to enter information. The free'companion' will print 3 generation trees and is only a couple of ££s to purchase the full version. I find it handy to print tree with what I've got and then while I am searching use it to make notes. (If you press 'ctrl' on your keyboard and then these links, they should open in a different window)

This is great, guys, thanks a million.... Fortunately, because I post in the other three History MBs, I'm not in pre-mod. That reference to a Jenkins sounds about right. My mum told me of a Jenkins link to the family, and that it probably came from Wales.... But just to make sure it's the right Charles St John. Is there a marriage registered for him, and if, so where would I find it? His wife - my grandmother - was Lucie (nee Kuenzi), if my spelling is correct.
