Can someone tell me in a small explanation what are displacement reactions and how do they work?

A more reactive element will displace ("push out") a less reactive element from its compounds. For example:
For metals ...
Magnesium is more reactive than copper. It can displace copper from copper oxide:
magnesium + copper oxide --> copper + magnesium oxide
Mg + CuO --> Cu + MgO
For non-metals ...
Chlorine is more reactive than iodine. It can displace iodine from potassium iodide:
chlorine + potassium iodide --> iodine + potassium chloride
Cl2 + 2KI --> I2 + 2KCl

i had a test on this today so i think i know what it is...
its where one chemical cancels out another chemical because it is more reactive.
to remember this, taylor swift dumped taylor lawtner for harry styles because harry was more reactive (pretty) ahaha
