Will London do the 2007 LeTour proud?

It's great to hear the confirmation that the 2007 Tour de France is to start in London. The last time it came to our shores the day before it arrived Chris Boardman lost the yellow jersey due to the bad performance of his team in the TTT and then Sean Yates took the yellow jersey when it returned to France.
Will a British rider get the jersey in 2007?
More importantly will the British public take the race to their hearts and flock to London and the South for the British based stages. I am sure that they will far outweigh the fantastic crowds that were attracted last time... My only concern is that there aren't any current British riders who are as well known to the public as Chris Boardman was, certainly in a positive way.

dont worry thousands of people will come out to watch. Remember the Tour in Dublin in 98?! There were no Irish riders taking part but hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Dublin for the prologue and it was a fantastic atmosphere.
You will have people from all over the UK and Ireland coming to see the race plus the usual die hards who follow the Tour everywhere

Wiggins has a fairly high profile and probably stands a chance of winnings the prologue so I expect lots of people will turn out for it.

I can't wait. I will definitely go and watch and I think the atmosphere will be amazing.

I am absolutely positive we will do it proud and I cannot think of anywhere better in Europe to start the tour. I know for a fact there is a massive publicity campaign being set up by the London Authorities to really sell 'Le Grand Depart'!

I think it should be a regular thing where the tour comes to London every 5-10 years. Hopefully may inspire some up and coming youngsters to take up the sport. The cycling authorities need to make the most of this opportunity!

By the way guys, you heard it here first!

YEEEESSS!! smiley Can't wait. There will be thousands of people watching this and I will be one of them. Last watched the Tour on Ditchling Beacon, the year Yates and Boardman won yellow and the crowds went crazy!

Saw the stage finish in Brighton and then spent the day in Portsmouth watching the depart then waiting for the finish - was great, and very different to watching stages in France (lots of old ladies on Brighton seafront failing to realise that the crowd was supposed to make a noise and get excited).

Particularly chuffed as I work for Kent CC and am employed to speak French - as they'll have a hand in stage 2, I think I'm going to have to make my labguage skills and love of the sport indispensable...

I was watching BBC London News last night and the female presenter was going on about how France was jinxed because after having lost the 2012 Olympics bid, London had now been chosen for the start of the Tour de France in 2007. She then went on about how we in France were probably sick as parrots and were probably all eating our berets at the news. More or less the same was being said on ITV Thames (“..one in the eye for the French”…)

Has anybody told the stupid woman and her moronic so called journalist colleagues that the choice was made by …(wait for it)…THE FRENCH!!!

Jeez….

doh

I can't wait. Just watching the Tour in France is something, the days building upto the actual stage are amazing. I regulary attend the Alpe D'Heuz stage over the past 10 years. But now to be able to watch it on our own patch is going to be incredible. maybe the Topur of Britian has opened the eyes of the Tour powers that be. That London can stage this kind of event and the public will support it just like they do at th eClassic, the Tour, the Giro, the Vuelta etc.

Yes, it is great the tour will start off in UK. When we see this dude dressed up as a syringe running madly up a climb with the cyclists, we'll have the perfect keepsake snapshot of Naspy!

Hopefully, your treatment will be finished by 2007 and the doctors will think it safe to let you out to meet the public.

BTW - nice to see the BBC London have given you a job.

It'll be great, I'll be there. Cycling does need that Pete Doherty charcter though (as suggested elswhare on this board) to get the best out of it. A Carisma transplant for Mr Millar perhaps- after all, he's not shy of experimenting with the cutting edge of modern medicine as I understand. Do it - think of England Dave. That way you can be complete and sell you soul as well as your body to the devil.

Anybody remember the world Road champs at Goodwood in the eighties? A great day out!
