The WBC heavyweight champion has retired as his knee won't recover in time for his required defence. What's the board's opinion on this now former champion?

This might not be one of those permanent retirements.
looks like better option than risk having to pull out again and getting stripped.
He might decide he feels fit again in 6 months and comeback.
Who knows these days?

Well with VK gone there's a lot more of an opportunity, I'm annoyed that he's retired as I would have liked to see him fit and mopping up a bit as he was the best around for my money. Audley's going to have to get friendly with Don King if he wants to get anywhere near a championship, King will control all the belts now wont he? Surprised actually - anyone see Audley as hw champ soon or is it just me?Quoted

I'm on the A-force bandwagon. K-Lam won't be.

So i suppose Rahman now is WBC champ. This era for the next 3-4 years is now gonna be tarnished with "ahh but he didn't get to fight Vitali". The Heavyweight scene has now lost it's last remaining "world class" fighter (or anything close). The only meaningful fight out there now is Wladimer - Rahman and both of them aren't fit to lace the gloves of any top class Heavy's in the modern era.

Lets see how he does against Willaims. He has not fought at a level of opposition yet to convince me he can be world champion and he is really getting on a bit now.

I say fair play to Vitali. If it's real, it's a hell of a decision to make, but a v.practical one. His body just isn't working out for him, and he obviously knows what people are saying about him with all these pull-outs.
Anyone estimate what kind of wealth he will have accumulated? Easier to retire when you have a nice retirement package.

Oh my god! why retire? why not vacate the title and win it back, he never beat the champ, only won a vacant title (unless you count wbo which was meaningless as Lewis was around at the time), never fought a mandatory - The guy was regarded as the best in the division but this decision now (in my eyes) means he achieved nothing. What a waste for someone who should have been the best in the world he done nothing with that title.

I dont think that but he didnt fight VK thing will happen, end of day VK never beat anyone of any note in his whole career - just an overprotected European fighter who lost to the 2 biggest names on his rec - Byrd and Lewis. I have never rated him and i dont think history will look on him kindly
