A wonderful and fully deserved achievement by Paula Radcliffe, exactly as expected by many of us contributing to this board. I do hope it will go a considerable way to silencing the appalling tabloid profanity which has been laid at her door by a vociferous minority who suffer in most cases, it appears to me from, from the "Green-Eyed Monster".
I should also like to make one last appeal to the BBC, please put the dreadful Brendon Foster out of his misery and consign him to the scrap heap. Steve Cram is so much more coherent and knowledgeable,is far fairer to the athletes, especially PR and lets be honest achieved a far greater degree of success. It would also be doing the viewing public a great service if Sally Gunnell, great runner that she was, could hand over the baton,(microphone) to someone who might be able to ask an intelligent question rather than her usual level of saccharine platitudes and meaningless mumbo-jumbo.

Whatever happened to that Christina Boxer? She disappered around 2002 for no reason. The BBC should take a leaf out of eurosport's book cos they have Heike Dreschler doing their trackside interviews....

I agree, well done Paula (about time). With regards to the comment on the BBC commentators, Brendan is not too bad but Sally is pathetic. It makes you wonder how she got that job and finally, why do we have to bring the american over to commentate, just to please Sue Barker?

A superb race by Paula, and a most convincing win. Finally, justice has been made to this excellent athlete with a global title she 's so long waited for, and a definite blow to all those who have made such ugly comments on her and her performances...

That American (MJ) talks more sense than the rest of the commentators by not being sycophantic and saying how it really is.We could do with him over here helping repair the damage British Athletics Management have done to British Athletics over the years. Doubtless if he did come over here to help British Management would pay lip service whilst cutting his legs off.

Big Congratulations to Paula on becoming world champion!
Now people who have doubted and unfairly critised her in the past can finally shut up and leave the women to have her moment of glory which has been long in coming!
As to the fact that she is doing it for herself every athlete out there is doing it for themselves!!! It is them who have given up there lives for athletics or indeed any sport, so please do not use that against her! If people do then they clearly have never been involved in competitive sport!

Well Dun Paula!! Your fabulous!

Ditto to what the others have said, it was just the same with Kelly Holmes a general slagging off after she didn't win & like Kelly Paula has well & truly rammed the critism back down the throats of the critics

Onward & upwards Paula You are a Class Act biggrin

How much I agree with the second paragraph. Foster has garbled his way through many years. Why the BBC racing coverage uses proper journalists while the athletics uses athletes with no training is beyond me.
One thing that's irrelevant now but could be useful in future was that someone at the drinks table shouted to Paula "fifty seconds." If you have been running for two hours might this be misheard as "fifteen seconds" and create worry. Better to say "fifty one or forty nine." As it was it was "forty eight seconds"

This is one of the most awesome turnarounds I've seen for as long as I can remember. With this world championship victory Paula has demonstrated inner strength, heart and alot of guts to bounce back from the disappointment and trauma of Athens as well as a myriad of criticism and even abuse at home from people who are totally clueless and unappreciative of the pain she's had to put herself through to establish herself as one of the most dominant forces in athletics today.
Paula's truly remarkable and I couldn't be happier for her.She's a legend.Well done Paula!!!

Nope not a legend. Everyone else has gone through pain too you know. All the criticism has been justified. Not truly remarkable either. She is an athlete so she runs. It's her job and for once she hasn't screwed up. Hooray. It's just taken her rather a long time to perform adequately.

I can't believe people are still criticising her. Paula has performed on many occasions so saying that 'for once' she has performed is ridiculous. What about all her other titles? Why can't everyone just congratulate her on her amazing win.

It's funny that only a week ago there were people saying she couldn't run championship marathon ((ridiculous claim) and also saying she only ran well when you won money. There are so many ill- informed people on this board. The worst is Jonathon Mahon who I hope breaks his leg playing rugby. I would laugh about that! (Of course he probably doesn't play any sports but just sits at home slagging off our national sports people.

Well done Paula. You are a class act. You are not the world, european and commonwealth champion. How many of her critics can say they have achieved that!

Keep on going to Beijing! Looking forward to seeing you win your gold!

I would agree with your posting as someone who has castigated Paula on these boards. For once she did get it right but that does not excuse the fact she got it hopelessly wrong in Athens. My comments are Helsinki is similart to London and Boston the marathons she has excelled in i.e. flat and fast with humidity to suit. If Paula is around for Beijing I think she will be wanting. As for the BBC comentary team pity help us

sorry Throwing stage, I think you said she couldn't run in championship marathons and 'I quote' the Helsinki course will be undulating and Paula won't be able to cope with that. That was an utter rubbish comment. You just made up a comment. You have no idea what the course will be like in Beijing like you didn;t know here. Are you going to take that comment back as well?

I'd like to congratulate Paula Radcliffe on her fantastic gold medal at the World Championships in Helsinki! Finally she's laid the ghost of the 1994 Olympic Marathon to rest and proved to herself and all of her fans that she has what it takes to be World Champion. She's an inspiration to all of us. Well done, Paula!

Way to go Paula Radcliffe.

Good to see you (hopefully) silence your critics.....

It has been painful to pick up a paper on any day in the run up to the World Championships MaraTHON and see all the poor , negative angled so-called sports journalism predicting your demise in Sundays race,

I ahve to have a rant here and say no wonder we can't get youngsters involved in the business of being successful athletes when, it seems that, the higher on your carrer path you climb, the greater the efforts of the press - tabloids and broadsheets alike - becoming in trying to put you down......

LAst pop at the wise and good of TV sports journalism.... relativly small beer I know but why coiuldn't foster and cram give her the title she deserved as she took her lap of honour? All that BS about the 2 greatest female marathon runners....... Radcliffe IS the fastest woman on the PLANET over the distance. She is also the WORLD CHAMPION. Surely you 2 could have given her the respect and acknowledgement she deserves... She is today, the BEST in the WORLD.

Be brave and imaginative you journalsits out there. Think out of teh box for once and get away from teh same old, she/he should/ccould have done better........

How much more could she have done?

Just like to point out that Paula has never run the Boston marathon, take it from someone who has run Boston, it's not flat!

As we all remember Paula won the New York marathon last year, the end of the NYCM is rather bumpy.
