Hi, I have a few questions about work experience. The area I want to get into is styling or photography. But any work experience in fashion will be helpful!!

What age can I start work experience?
Where do I go to get info and applications for work experience?
And any other helpful advice will also be great...

    Hey!

Ah cool styling and photography are great areas to get into and the best thing is you don't even need to find work experience as you can do it all yourself.

The best way to learn about styling and photography is by organising your own photo shoot. Why don't you see if any of your friends would like to do a photo shoot for a textiles or art project and then you can offer to shoot it and style it. Or you can just do your very own shoots from scratch.

I am really interested in styling so when I was at uni I just decided to organise a photo shoot focussing around vintage clothes. I got one of my friends to model, one to photograph and then I put all the outfits together and chose the location which was a small wood! It was great fun and the pictures came out quite well too.

If you would like some more hands on work experience then the best thing to do is write to magazines and try to get experience through working on their fashion departments. The magazines who are most likely to take you on are those who are smaller and that way you are likely to get a more hands on experience. You could also write to small fashion brands and ask if you could assist their fashion shoots then you will get to see what goes on and take ideas.

But like I said the best thing to do is organise your own shoots then start to build up an impressive portfolio!

    Hope that helps

    Jerry xx

    Hey!

Ok well I would first of all recommend that you found out the names of the fashion assistants of the magazines you want to contact rather than the fashion editors as these are the ones who are most likely to respond - you can usually find the names in the lists at the front of mags. The best thing to do is email I'd say as you are more likely to get a quick and direct response; perhaps send a letter and email to be sure!

I remember when I was writing to Dazed and Confused Magazine I started off the email by talking about a particular feature from their currently issue that I really liked. I then went onto saying why I wanted to work for them and when I was available. It is good to get all those details in first.

The body of the email can just include general info about yourself like any experience you have etc but it doesn't need to be that long. Also attach your CV - it is always good to try and make this look creative by perhaps including an illustration or fashion image that you like on the top of it.

Once you have emailed, it's always good to do a chase up call perhaps a day or so later to see if they received it and whether there is anything available. Again the important thing here is that you get through to the right person!

I would say the best thing to do is contact smaller magazines or perhaps even fashion blogs because they are less likely to be inundated with CV's! I

Are there any particular mags you'd like to contact??

Good luck though - I'm sure you'll find something good.

    Hey,

I will be 15 when I have my work experience week in May 2010. I know that I would absolutly love a career in the fashion industry, given the choice, my job would be as the fashion director for a magazine (hopefully ELLE).

Please could you recommend a number of suitable jobs I could do for my work experience.
After a small bit of research, am I right in thinking that most fashion magazines will not take under 18's.
If so would this still be the same if I knew someone who worked at the magazine?

    Thank you very much.
