    Hello you two
(as someone or other says - can't imagine who that might be .....)

I've been thinking of you both and wondering how "things" were going.
Personally - and I guess I do have a personal interest - I think if a dog has just /once/ bitten a child, or even an adult, it should be put down. The dog that bit me went on to bite a fairly small child and then the police were called in and the dog was destroyed. Apparently they get the /taste/ for it, sort of revert to their ancestral wolfish tendencies. I wouldn't know about that, but I would take no chances if I ruled the world.

Of course I'm sad for the owners, but I'm fairly clear about who comes higher up the pecking order!
And I know just what is meant about /some/ parents excusing their children come what may, and have indeed seen some examples in ML.! But that tends to raise a lot of dust, so saynomore .............

Long time, no posts. I did want to get in here to wish all a very Happy Christmas. As it was, I got sick and didn't even get to Midnight Mass - son was reading. Not a very happy one. Certainly not as miserable or terrible as for some.

Saw dear Smoctus else-thread so thought I'd pop in to wish you all the best 2013s possible.

    La Bez, how are you?

    Hello Exxers, Happy New Year

Sorry you were sick and Christmas was miserable

I did get to Midnight Mass and it was lovely, the Bishop gave a good homily - spoke on how difficult it might seem to feel celebratory in the wake of Sandy and Newtown.

Being the Cathedral we always get the Bishop for the "big" celebrations. The church is really just an oversized parish church and, of course, we have our own priests and most of the time we function as an ordinary parish - but then Christmas and Easter come along and the Bishop takes over. One Easter the Bishop wasn't well and I remember thinking what a nice change it made that our Pastor actually got to take the main services of the holiday himself instead of having to play second fiddle.

Speaking of Bishops our retired Bishop, who had gone on working for the diocese long after retirement, pretty much to the end in fact, - he confirmed both Junior Berries - died on Christmas Day. Not unexpected, he had been ill a long time and he was 92, it seems somehow fitting that, after a long life spent in God's service, he should go to his reward on a special feast day.

    Hi folks ..

AS I said else-thread - I went to our parish church on Christmas Day for Christmas mass. I *had* been hoping to make alternative arrangements but visitors (daughter plus partner) arrived later than planned.

The mass was a bit of a scrum with children rushing around excited .. It was lovely seeing them but not exactly the peaceful and holy experience I had planned. Fortunately I had recorded BBC midnight mass so I spent the next few days watching (and listening) to it on and off .

WE "skyped" US family on Christmas Day .. which was very enjoyable ..
I must say I'm pleased at the calm now ..

Exxers - I hope you feel better now and things in RL have improved... The "Virus of doom" has not hit us in the North yet - but London daughter was very poorly with it over Christmas

A Happy New Year to all Catholic Threaders ..

Sorry if it's already been asked/answered elsewhere, I must admit I haven't read all the pages. Just wanted to know, purely out of non-catholic curiosity... what's a 'confimation name'?

    Hello everybody !

    And hello to Rich TB

A Confirmation name? Or names in my case. When we are confirmed (which used to be at a young age but is more realistic now) we get to chose a saint's name to adopt. I'm very ashamed to say I can't remember the whys about this, but it's good fun and educational as you can imagine.

    Mine are Frances Therese.

exxers ! I'll catch up with you elsethread, but really happy to hear you are feeling better.

I've never really understood the practice of a confirmation name. I converted to Catholicism as an adult and was offered the chance of adopting one, but I just used my own name instead. But some people seem to be very keen to adopt the name of their favorite saint - each to their own.

I'm around but I'm not at home so hopefully the link below will work - haven't really got to grips with cutting and pasting on my iPhone. The link explains it better than I can but essentially taking a new name emphasizes that the sacrament is linked to Baptism - a "delayed" part of the same rite. I think as well choosing a new confirmation name for yourself probably emphasises that making this final step in the process of becoming a Christian is a choice you are making for yourself, superseding the promises made on your behalf if baptized as an infant

    iol.ie/~pjackson/rec...

If it doesn't work I'll try again

Hello all Catholic ML threaders - lovely to see you.

La Bez, so sorry that your (retired) Bishop died..what a privilege to be called on Christmas Day.

Son is supposed to be confirmed in May and I went to the parents' class yesterday...to find that the date clashes with him going to France for an exchange (school initiative)...I shall brooch it with him. Hey ho. It would be so wonderful if he could be confirmed with his friends and at the same time as his friends from primary school. The answer will come. Well enough for Mass today! And we have a beautiful new Tabernacle.

Thank you all for good wishes and I send mine to you.

If anybody could add Charlie P to their prayers, I'd be really grateful. He's a little boy being strengthened for an operation next month. His sister died before she was born and the parents are in a very bad way. Many thanks - exxers

P.S. Smoctus...where would I find you else-thread? I saw you in the cellar once! Maybe you don't spend much time on the MB or maybe you just go to different freds??

I'm mostly in the cellar, but also in with the Copers and Carers. Once you find one of my posts I believe it's possible to find the others by clicking onto my name? But i don't know if this sort of thing is approved of so have never done it myself, but you are very welcome to come and find me that way. Anyway, I'm outa there at the moment so there won't be anything recent.

Are you feeling any better? Please take buckets of health-bringing tonic wines so you make it to the Tate !

Thank you for the prayers for Charlie.

What on EARTH are you doing a pre-Lenten fast for? That's a new one. Will bring wine as requested or just buy some there.

I'm sorry that you have to go in to the Copers & Carers but glad that it's there for you. It seems a bit "lurkish" to try and find you like that, especially when I don't belong in it (yet.)

Nuttin to do with being ultra religious. I just wanted a bit of a break, as one does, and calling it Lent Cum Early seemed less flouncy!

Re alcoholic cures - I meant start quaffing now in order to effect the cure!
Don't weight yourself down with too much booty for the meet. There must be a bun bar somewhere to which we can adjourn. I don't think I'll last into the evening, though.

And don't worry - I'm not "coping" myself, but have affiliations.

Just to let you know I have and will continue to include you and Mr. E in my prayers. Is St. Jude the chap to help?

Look, I hope you are being Good and taking all medicaments because you know you have a hot date in two weeks' time, don't you. Somehow you must get to that, even if born in on a litter by some handsome young page three pages.

Meanwhile, sleep a lot, worry not (a lot), take medicines a lot, drink whatever is allowed a lot.

Dearest Mole and JPBS, Very touched. Was terribly worried this morning but husband significantly better now. Bit up and down. I'm not too good but...if I really was ill I wouldn't be in here. Prayers (even "quick" ones) would be most hugely appreciated. I will keep you in mine. Bit of a traumatic time with other things as well e.g. elderly Mater & so on. Dearest exxers and Mr. exxers and Famblee

Now I've started and I just don't quite know what to say!

Well - you know how it is that sometimes you meet or get to know of someone you feel an immediate bond with? Well, that's how I feel about you, and with today's sad news I feel it more than ever important that you somehow get to the Tate so we can meet up before it's too late.

Am bending St. Jude's ear - in fact both of them.

LaBez - waves and prayers in your direction to.

We all owe and rely on ML to such an extent that today has knocked us for six, I think.

JPBS - yes I will keep your daughter in my prayers. Probably well worth getting the tests done again to give a firm answer one way or the other. It's very possible that due to storage/handling mistakes one or other of the tests is inaccurate - most likely the one that suggested a problem

Glad to see positive news from both of you tonight.

Got a text from Elder Berry last night saying that she didn't even have to darken the doorsteps of church for her ashes yesterday. The text read

"Ann Arbor, where priests chill on the Diag* giving out ashes"

*Diag - the main quad on campus

I went to one of the two prayer services rather than one of the 4 masses for mine. The prayer services are aimed at the schoolchildren but are obviously open to all. The one I went to, in the morning, was attended by the children from the parochial school. The one in the evening - which I've always been to in the past - is aimed at the children in the public schools and the secular private schools. It was fun, largely led by the children - who did the readings, provided the choir and wrote many of the prayers. And the priest who took it is the one who is obviously allocated the school as one of his main jobs (they all visit etc but they always have one who has a particular responsibility for getting involved with the school, the RE program and the youth groups). He obviously has quite a rapport with them so the homily was fun.
