    Instand minisyny

Lucas applied for job in distant Durban. Katie hot happy.

Pebble, after a year ion SA, exposes herself to risk of rape/mugging in a manner I find wholly incredible, walking home alone at night but gets away with it.

No mention yet of here not returning to UK!

I listened amazed at Kate's breezy injunction to 'not leave it too late' walking back from the Mall.

    WHAT???????????????????

Is this VW's one-eyed view of SA life in the teeth of so much info on the TA threads?
    OR
is it setting up some attempted or actual rape story...........? To warn all TA fans / Brits off coming to SA>>>>>>>>>>??

You maybe get why I am baffled like OI?

Just to clarify, Kate would expect Phoebe to get a taxi from a known, reliable service from the mall, or a lift home. Her friend Mandisa's brother gave her a lift. But not wanting Lucas to see her with an older boy, she asked Milton to drop her at the end of the road.

We're well aware of the personal security situation in Jo'burg. Indeed, we demonstrated what an unwise decision Phoebe made, by her near-miss with the would-be mugger.

And let me just knock on the head any suggestion of subliminal messages from Vanessa about South Africa. Because of her long service leave, she wasn't here for any of the production process, including story planning.

Actually it was "down the road and round the corner". For Milton to drop her off and watch her enter her home safely would have been credible.

Am I correct to picture them as living in a bungalow with high walls and gate?

AmEx3 seems not to be getting the attention of earlier series. No link form this site. Not on R4X front page, or even on the "Drama" direct link.

And the "Episodes" still has a rogue entry from Series 2.

I thought that Phoebe didn't want Milton to know where she lived. I must not have been listening very carefully, because I hadn't picked up that Milton was Mandisa's brother. I got very confused by the various African males, though. I found it really difficult to differentiate their voices. I wasn't at all sure that I even knew how many had featured. Lucas, yes, but two younger ones? or was it three?

Apparently first voice was wannabe mugger. How we were supposed to know that I'm not quite sure, but....three you go.

Good to hear that Mr K thought up the idea of South Africa all by himself too without a single hint or input from the Editor. Shame on us for even whispering any alternative provenance.

Of course, why Kate was in SA in the first place, or that Phoebe was thus engineered to go to SA just before she goes into Y10 and GCSEs........ah, well, that's another matter entirely. Of course. That's settled that, then.

First voice discovered that she was English. In reappearance he greeted her as "English Lady" to make it clear he was the same man.

I have asked elsewhere where they live and how close to the Mall. In Melville it seems

"Melville is a Bohemian suburb of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. It is the location of many restaurants and bars, which are mostly frequented by students from the nearby University of Johannesburg, located in Auckland Park, and the University of the Witwatersrand, located in Braamfontein. It is also one of the city's gay villages."

JPBS still appears to be incapacitated, so I’ll step into the breach. If you’ve done one as well, JPBS, post it anyway. Corrections and amendments welcome! Editorial comments in [Square brackets]

    SYNOPSIS FOR EPISODE 1
    TUESDAY 3rd JULY

Whole epi takes place in the Johannesburg suburb of Melville. Epi opens with Kate and Pheobe in an ice cream parlour. Kate is worried that they will be late back and Lucas is expecting them. Pheobe presents a blasé attitude that would do her mother credit. They race each other back from the Mall, Kate with the shopping and Pheobe pushing Sipho in the buggy. [Very strange – Nolli is not mentioned at all in this epi!]

When they get home, Lucas is on the phone and angry to be disturbed. He demands a drink, his watch etc etc. Pheobe offers to make his drink, but Kate suggests she goes back to the Mall with her friends. He announces that he wants to move to Durban to a better job. He is being left behind by younger colleagues and is nearly 40. It is not in the bag yet, but could start in a month or less. He brushes aside all Kate’s objections – about her job, having Lucas’ family nearby, childcare, etc. “Will the new job mean more sociable hours?” asks Kate. No. More responsibility means more hours.

On the way to the Mall, she is accosted by a creepy man of indeterminate age, who spots she is English and offers to take her to a party with “real action.” She struggles to shake him off, until she sees Mandesa and her friends.

Later, when Mandesa has gone home with Nkose, Madesa’s brother Milton offers to give Pheobe a lift home. She gets all embarrassed and red in the face They talk about Nkose, who is at college like Milton. Feebs says she is really cool and sophisticated and she wants to be like her when she is 18. “You are heading in the right direction” replies Milton “She is your girlfriend isn’t she?” “Where did you hear that?” “Mandesa told me.” “My sister is such a gossip – Radio Melville!” [That's got to be nod to us, hasn't it? Who has written this epi - Keri?]

Lucas and Kate argue further, but she takes herself upstairs. She wants to check on Sipho. When she says to Lucas that she’s worried S has a fever, he is more concerned that he might catch it – “I don’t need to get sick right now.” They realise Pheobe is not back yet and Lucas goes to investigate.

Pheobe insists on being dropped off short of home because she is being worried about what Lucas would say if he saw her being brought home after dark by a boy. She is accosted by the creep again. Just as things get heavy, Lucas comes and intervenes.

While Kate is with Sipho, she gets a call from Johan, from the Project and she tells him her woes. The Dum-di-dum-di is Kate saying “see you on Thursday.”

Sorry about lateness - headache plus RL.

    I can't do tomorrow's AmEx ... I won't be in much of the day .. ..
    JPBS
    ****
    Ambridge Extra - July 3rd 2012
    **********************************
The scene opens in Jo'berg SA. Kate is talking to Phoebe - they are shopping and discussing various flavours of IceCream for they have just enjoyed some. They are in good spirits and race each other home - though Kate is worried at being "late".
    ****
Lucas is home -in "Melville" when they arrive. He is talking angrily to "Desmond" on the phone. The conversation is about his career in journalism where he feels he has been sidelined for other (younger) people have got the best commissions.. He snaps at Kate when she is not quick enough in supplying his drink. Kate appears embarrassed and encourages Phoebe to meet her friends in the Mall.

    ***
On the way there Phoebe is accosted by a strange man -who wants her to go to a "party". She explains she is *not* a tourist but a resident - and is meeting some friends.
    ***

At the mall we hear Phoebe getting on very well with her friend Mandisa's brother - Milton. They have evidently been there a while and Mandisa has gone home early to get some homework done. Milton remarks that Phoebe is "red in the face" - he is concerned she is "getting ill" but she says not. He asks if she has booked a taxi home and when she says not offers to give her a lift. On the way back they chat - Phoebe worries about not being "cool" and envies another girl Ncosi. She thinks that she and Milton are an "item" but Milton denies it. Phoebe gives Milton directions but is worried that Lucas will be angry at seeing her with an older boy - and late. For this reason she insists Milton drop her short of her home and he agrees. However he is concerned about her and thinks she is foolish to walk for it is after dark ..not safe.
    ***

Meanwhile at home Lucas talking to Kate about his lack of prospects - he wants to move to Durban where he feels he will stand a better chance in his career. Kate objects because - she says - she is moving forward in hers having just started a new project - the "Crisis centre". He dismisses her concerns - she will find "another job". She could take any job ..whereas for him it is his last chance as he is approaching 40. The post in Durban is a senior one.

They could be in Durban in a few weeks or months - but nothing is certain... Kate reminds him that she took a long time to settle where they are and what about the children? Lucas says that the children will soon settle down. They will have a bigger house, near the sea, have baby sitters as he will earn more money. He is non-commital about him being at home more but says maybe it will be better for her in Durban.

She walks off at this point to "settle Sypho" for she says she is worried about him being ill .. However - Lucas seems more worried he will catch whatever is wrong with Sypho. They realise it is late and Lucas asks where Phoebe is? On being told she has gone to meet her friends Lucas worries about her whereabouts. He is concerned she is not back and goes to look for her.

    *****
We hear Phoebe as she approaches her home ... she is accosted by the same man as earlier - who wants to "help" her. This time he is overtly aggressive and sneering - she is a "smart girl" with a "smart phone" which he wants to see! This is in spite of her warning that her step-father will be looking out for her. Lucas then turns up in the nick of time and tells him to push off. The man is not to be outfaced - he jeers "one tasty little daughter - you should take good care of her." Lucas tells Phoebe she has been foolish in walking around in the dark - she could so easily have been mugged. Phoebe apologises and says she lost track of time.

    ***

At the end of the episode we hear Kate settling Sypho - she then takes a phone call ..from Johan - they are (ostensibly) speaking about "our work". She is upset over the possible move and cannot understand Lucas "He has turned into another guy .." She interrupts herself and apologises for being unprofessional but then tempers her apology "... you are so sweet to me. Johan - I'll have to go - till Thursday?"
    ***

NB I wonder if the concern about young people "being ill" is concern about Malaria .. for it is endemic in parts of Africa.

Thanks a million for doing that Pat - and sorry to let you all down!

    Some comments -
I too thought too it was a nod to us in calling Mandesa "radio Melville". However in my daughters village (they did VSO) one of the residents was called "the BBC".

I enjoyed that episode - it sounded authentic though its a while since I had any connections there

Malaria isn't a problem in Jo'burg, or most of SA. There is just one area to the northeast, including some of the popular game reserve areas like the Kruger National Park, where there are varying risks of it. The high risk area is fairly small.

    SYNOPSIS FOR EPISODE 2
    THURSDAY 5th JULY

[Synopsist’s note: After epi 1, I thought Mandesa was Milton’s younger sister, but it would seem she is Nkose’s sister.]

Kate and Lucas are at home. Lucas is trying to decide which suit to wear for his interview next week, but Kate is distracted. “You could at least pretend you care. I might not even get this job, but” he adds, sotto voce “I’m not going to mess the interview up.” Kate is going to college for a fundraising meeting for the women’s crisis care centre. Lucas’ mum is going to look after the younger ones, but Pheobe is out. Lucas is worried about where she is, but Kate says she’s OK – she’s gone swimming with Mandesa. Lucas doesn’t think that’s particularly safe, given the events of the other night. He doesn’t think Kate backs him up when discussing the dangers with Pheobe. That is their job as parents – to keep their children safe and well. Kate says she doesn’t want to spoil Pheobe’s fun when they have such little time left together.

    ***

Pheobe and Mandesa are at the swimming baths, ogling the local talent. Feebs only has eyes for Milton. Mandesa points out that he is 18 and is going out with her sister. “He didn’t seem so sure about that the other night” says Feebs. Mandesa presses her for details [She really is Radio Carter’s spiritual twin!] Pheobe goes to get drinks and Milton comes over. Mandesa tries to interrogate him too. She gets out of him that he and some mates, including Nkose, are planning a camping trip down to the Cape. Mandesa pushes to be allowed to go too, with Pheboe. Milton says she’ll need to ask Nkose, meaning ‘no’, but she takes this as a yes.

Pheobe is very disappointed when she realises the trip is in Late August. She’ll already be back in Ambridge. No problem, says Mandesa – just change your flights and gi back a month later. Pheobe is very negative at first, but comes round to the idea.

    ***

At the College, Kate bumps into her father-in-law, Michael [he helpfully introduces himself as such!] He is there to do some lecturing on a new curriculum in rural schools. It seems they have a colleague in common- Johan. As Kate tries to go, Michael gently leans on her to support Lucas. He realises it will be hard for Kate, but it will be good for all of them. He knows he can rely on her support.

    ***

Johan is effusive with praise for Kate’s work on social networking. She bursts into tears on him and says how the whole family is ganging up on her. He comforts her and, after a ludicrously abbreviated seduction, they are at it like rabbits. Mid-copulation, Pheobe rings to ask if she can stay for another month and go on the trip to the Cape. Kate is very distracted(!) and agrees. [I suspect she doesn’t realise what she’s agreed to!]

Indeed in Epi 1 Milton referred to Mandisa and Nkhose as "sisters eh?"

yet "Milton: Mandisa's elder brother, who turns Phoebe's head."

    www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/...

So clearly Milton is having sox with his sister.

I too thought the 'sisters!" thing referred to Mandesa being Milton's sister, but then there didn't seem to be the comfortable/familiar relationship between Pheobe and Milton, that you would perhaps expect with your best friend's older brother. Being Nkose's sister makes more sense.

It didn’t strike the ChrisnAlicenSweatyntheForge note, to me. T’was more well worn notepad and a 4 inch hb pencil slowly rolling off the desk to the floor accompanied by a kissey suckey to back of hand sound, note. To my ear they didn’t do the do.

No they didn't do the sound effects .. but thank goodness for that!

It was fairly clear (to me) from Kate's words that they were well on the way to a racing finish .. certainly the home straight.

And posters are right (IMHO) - it seems that Milton is *not* Mandisa's elder brother. It is Nkosi who is related to Mandisa - they are sisters.

That is contrary to what it says on AmEx "characters" page

Thank you so much for the synopses!!!! I'm looking forward to hearing the fallout from Kate's hasty yes. I suspect that when she realizes what she's agreed to, she'll take the easy route of being the "cool" parent by agreeing with Phoebe, instead of being a baddie in her daughter's eye and admitting that she was distracted. After all, it's not as though Kate gives a toss for any plans that Phoebe's other parents may have made regarding her return home! Far easier for Kate to deal with an angry Roy in an occasional phone call than to have to deal with an angry teenager in her own home.

Thinking IRL, why should she NOT stay on for the UK Summer and go camping in August?

Though IRL SA schools have a term from mid July to end September

    Magnificent summary!
Especially the last bit about Kaye and Johan...

Actually, after hearing her home life, I am rooting for her to go off and leave foul, chauvanistic Lucas. It doesn't seem to occur to him taht hes never got promoted because he's not terribly good. From hwat we've heard so far he's a sexist pig who expects the world to revolve around him. WHy would anyone want to stay with him?

But as for Phoebe and her mates - give me a break. It's like the photo-love stories from teenage girls comics brought to life. And we're expected to believe that sheltered Phoebe would even imagine that she'd be allowed to go away camping with "some guys from college"? Do the scriptwriters have teenage children of their own? She's a child, for heavens sake.

The Lucas we heard in epi 2 was a lot less chauvanistic than the one in epi 1. It was much more the Lucas of old. He is having to shoulder the full burden of parental responsibility whilst Kate tries to be bessie mates with her offspring. One presumes he didn't have much choice in having his stepdaughter to stay for a year. Maybe the only way to get Kate to do ANYTHING is to be very direct?

In my youth, I spent a year in Denmark. My English good manners were frequently mistaken for indecisiveness. I realise Denmark is not in Africa, but I wonder if something similar is happening here? Milton asked for a drink in a similarly direct manner.

Epi 1 Lucas was very stressed. Epi 2 calm.

Are you saying Lucas is Sandy Toksvig?

I thought that the "taster" supplied by the writers was misleading .. I didn't think Lucas *was* taking it out on Kate in the second episode ..

And they need to alter the blurb about Lucas, Nkosi and Mandisa on the AmEx pages
