Hello. I’m Senior Producer in the online team here at BBC 6 Music, and I oversee our website and digital content elsewhere on the web.
Today we’re announcing the closure of the two BBC message boards belonging to 6 Music for Gideon Coe’s show and the Freak Zone.
Both boards will close at midday on Monday 25 February.
We care passionately about interacting with our listeners and giving people a platform to share their opinions. However, as you may have noticed, it’s pretty quiet on these boards, and has been for some time.
So, in line with other areas of the BBC, we are moving away from hosting message boards and focussing on social networking spaces like facebook.com/BBCRadio6Music and twitter.com/bbc6music. If you don’t already like and follow us there, please do get involved and join in the conversation.
Thank you all for your participation.

Thanks Richard. Must admit I've not used the boards for a while. Can I ask a question if you oversee the website, which is why you don't link to the webcams any more? I did enjoy seeing what is happening. The new platform for the web pages can support a webcam icon alongside listen live and contact to the left of the picture as far as I can tell from other stations. Could you put it back on 6? I liked it with the popout and choice of 2 cams and the Hub.

Hi Woodnorton. Good question. When the 6 Music homepage changed to become part of BBC iPlayer Radio, we took the decision to remove the webcam for 'desktop' users as the technology was getting on a bit and the image quality sub-par. Furthermore, only a small proportion of our site visitors used the webcam. Instead we've focussed more on photographing events in the studio more, and also bringing you video content where possible. That's not to say we won't bring back some kind of studio webcam in future, of course. By the way, you might be interested to know we have left the webcam as an option for those visiting from a mobile device. Hope that helps.

Thanks very much for the response. Please do bear it in mind for the future!

Very soon there won't be any discussion about the BBC on any message boards. Goodbye Archers (not enough contributors- I know many board modders who's kill for over 1000 contributors). Goodbye Radio 6- well to be honest I only came across it by accident because I wanted to discuss the reasons behind re-recording Please Please Me, so I won't really miss it.
What ARE the Beeb going to spend what's left of our £4 billion pounds a year on?

As the Beeb does away with the discussion boards, they shouldn't be that surprised that the listeners do away with listening.

Indeed. Especially if the inanity that passes for listener interaction (such as "send us photos of your bed hair") continues........

I don't think the BBC suit, they put up on the Feedback programme (if you didn't hear it, it's available to listen again), was particularly informative. He failed to answer what were really quite straightforward questions, showing no real interest in engaging with the listeners representatives - those in the studio or on the phone.
It was a display of ill-informed arrogance towards who as Roger Bolton (the presenter) said, paid his wages.

Thanks for letting us know.
Gid's board has been the scene of a lot of fun over the years, not least because the only posts we have seen from other users are related only to music and Gid's show.
I often find myself [internet search engine]ing for stuff and find the answer here.
I think it would be a marvellous resource for the BBC's users for the closed message board to remain searchable to give us things like the source of the Ivor the Engine theme and what songs have station announcements in them.
It's what Lord Reith would have wanted.

Sound like an outbreak of stuff on the Archers board a few years ago....

I remember a time in days of yore
When the message boards were so much more
Days of discourse with banter and pun
It really was a lot of fun
But then the BEEB with fist of steel
Put the cosh on comments real
They only wanted praise and pats
No more could users simply chat
So one by one they blocked IDs
And brought the boards right to their knees
Users who had much to say
Were simply told to go away
And when the boards they finally broke
Old Auntie mused why no one spoke
Seemed not to see the deed she'd done
By finally silencing everyone
And claimed that there was no more need
Of messageboards or feedback free
As worlds embraced the media new
Old Auntie took a different view
She stopped all talk both fair and cruel
With obfuscation by house rule
Those contributions from the loyal
In moderation she'd embroil
As prophecy was self-fulfilled
The messageboards she finally killed
And those who once had given toss
Had all been told to boogie off
A sadder day we may not rue
With virtual chums that we once knew
We bid farewell to mod and ban
and travel to a different land
Where now we speak on books of face
And twit and blog all over the place
But won't forget the time's we scored
A hit upon the messageboard
Those days are gone but friends remain
Much as it is to BEEBs disdain
We still support, we still decry
But do it with a weather eye
On those who'd seek to close down chatter
And miss the things that really matter
The Messageboards were so much more
Than Auntie BEEB gave credit for
Mozo signing off – over and out

Excellent. I've posted a link to this over on the Archers MB.

The message board of Gideon Coe
Was THE place for duffers to go.
They there filled their heads
With stuff about sheds
And great music that came from the show!

Are they closing it down? Oh dear. I suppose that's what people like to do these days. Have we milked it for every last drop?
When it's closed, can I have a nice sit down?
