    I doubt it'll be complimentary!

It's not, even though it's not meant to be out yet it is. I read "Silence of the Riley" standing in the book shop. I'll wait for the free library copy fot the rest.

    here are a few bits:

You either thought you were, or he thought you were, President Johnson? a spokesman or something?

The old Austrailian disco story: You started hitting him while being dragged away from laughing heroin addicts with long hair. I think you've said before Mark hit you first?

You and the other band memebrs didn't write the songs. He's said this before, I think

and some other bits that have been in the extracts and some more I skipped or have forgotten.

I thought you would already have a copy, being a DJ on the radio and in the book.

Great stuff. I will look in the 'fiction' section of Waterstones then eh!

Ha! Brilliant. Thats why I still love him.. he can't help himself.

I thought he knew I was President Johnson! I'm sure I told him when I joined! Cloth ears! I was more Arthur Scargill probably. The band weren't happy...and I was the one who told him. Mark has always wanted to be Captain Beefheart...and the whole 'I write everything' and being abusive to band members was pure Captain. Better than emulating Donovan I suppose!

Yeah - he slapped each band member in turn - but I saw it coming and stopped him. He scarpered with his missus..then we followed him back to his table and I asked him what his problem was..he rolled his sleeeve up (like they do in Laurel and Hardy films before the punch someone) and hit me in the face. So I hit him back...a bit harder. Then we both got thrown out of the club. The next day were did a tv interview. I think I still have the photo Craig took off the tv in the hotel room. No long haired heroin addicts...but some nice Australian people drinking and dancing. Very sinister....

I remember Mark's 'missus' (and the bands manager )waking me up the morning of the TV programme (and the night after the barney) and she said "He's had that coming for years"! ha!

As for writing the songs...OK - truth will out..MES did write all the songs...and he played all the instruments on the records... during the gigs he told us where to put our fingers...he did all the artwork...and he is... in fact... THE SECOND COMING... I SEE BRIGHT LIGHTS....

I was talking to a former band member a few weeks ago. I told him he should write a book. That would be a great factual companion to this unputdownable 'version of events'. I'll keep you posted!

A good title would be TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION and in this case IT REALLY IS! The stories from the 80's / 90's I've heard from band members are mind boggling. Really. You wouldn't believe! Ha!

    Publish and Be Damned!

When I say I love Mark - I mean it. I'm still a fan...and the making of the myth is hugely entertaning!

I've remembered another bit, Mark said he had a black eye for the TV show and the presenter was asking about the "fracas" and Mark said "Ask Marc."

If you mean Steve Hanley could write a book, I'd like to know how he survived for all those years in the band.

Ha...thats true...but he appears to be after the sympathy vote by suggesting i hit him without provocation. Awww bless. I can't help it if i thump harder than he does.

I've never hit anyone without being hit first...I mean..its not nice is it! And I haven't been hit for a long time...tho that could change! ha!

As for who could write the book? Well - I was only in the band for gettin on for 5 years...but Steve (20 years-ish) Craig (dunno - maybe 13?14?) or Paul (not sure - but longer than me) Brix ! All good candidates!

    A collaboration?!

    Ha!

Simon Fords book (Hip Priest) is very good. 99% correct as far as I'm aware.

aha, I was going to ask you how long you were actually in the band after seeing you in the lineup on a few years' worth of Peel sessions, for some reason I had the impression you were around for Dragnet and nowt else. Great, me :-)

Forget about the band, does the book tell all on his recent squirrel-clipping antics or will that have to kick off volume two?

Yeah, it looks like that's what he's trying to do, there's no mention of him hitting you first or at any time. I wonder if the whole book is like that to make him look like as good as posible, only you and the other band members will know, you could go through it line by line writing your version of what happened.

I've never been hit or hit anyone but women don't from what I've seen, it's more hair pulling and slaps.

Have you got the book yet?

Is that the one that say's your sister is Lisa Riley? Is that the 1% that's wrong.

Did you go around saying she was your sister?

Who's shown them to you? The guardian and the man that show's books? I don't know who that man might be.

Are you going to buy one? money for a few bits of truth
