books.guardian.co.uk...

I'm not sure they'll be much about the other people in the band if this bit is anything to go by, mostly just about him?

"Different times then, different people, unlike the ungrateful musicians I employ.

They say that there's a generation gap: you're not actually like your mam and dad, you're more like your grandfather or grandmother. In this respect I had more in common with my grandad than I did with my dad - just hiring people off the street. If they go, they go, if they don't, they don't. I'm not really bothered where people come from. Mind you, I don't understand why everyone makes such a big deal about where they go, either. The other members of the Fall came, they saw, they f'd off, and now I no longer see them. I find it all very boring, to be honest."

I've reserved my copy at the library smiley

Oh dear, maybe there is erm

contains offensive language if you're bothered by that kind of thing.

For someone who isn't bothered by what people think a cowboy hat is an very small thing to be worried about and I like Totally wired, it was the first song of the Fall's I heard.

Should I be writing this on here or pretending it doesnt exist, do you mind, Marc? Have you already read the whole book? You can say no comment if you like.

I'm starting to think I shouldn't have begun this thread. It's digging up old news.

At least the other band members will get their say in Dave Simpsons book 'The fallen' and on their own BBC messageboard if they like, Mark E Smith doesn't have one of them.

Ha! It'll be a great read.

Not at all RJ.. this book will start the interest off again...so I expect a bit more of the same.

The hat story is very true. Container Drivers in Brighton. A bit of light relief as I remember...and Smiffy was laughing too ... as i remember. Despite popular beief MES was more often than not (early days at least) a good laff.

One of the things i loved about Mark was his sense of humour. He can of course be a right miserable git..but when he was on good form he was brilliant to be around.

Mark's memory is worse than mine bless him!

The 'marriage' story is all wrong. It is true I didnt invite him to my wedding (nor did Steve Hanley who got married a week after me). I got married on Xmas eve..Steve got married in the 1st coupla days in January.I got sacked a coupla days after Steve got married..but not by phone. We met at a pub called The Old Garret on Princes Street. He didn't sack me outright..he said " we're going to Europe without you - and if it doesn't work I'll call you"! Ha! I coincidnentally met Craig Scanlan on Oxford Rd train station on the way home.

It was a bit of a shock - but a relief at the same time..coz he was 'on the turn' and we weren't getting on...ha!

I'm not at all scarred or sour about my time in The Fall. Far from it! It was brilliant. Mark was/is brilliant..and inadvertantly it opened all the doors that got me where I am today...which ironically sees me playing Fall tracks all the time (Including the new album last week)...so Mark is deluding himself there a bit. I have 2 scars ; one from a dog bite..the other from a clumbsy roller-skate incident (which come to think of it - sounds like a Fall album title).

Mark has a big problem with me not going off the radar when I left the band...but that will always be his problem not mine...and a bit of a shame.

I co-wrote a lot of the great early Fall tunes...Totally Wired/ Fiery Jack / Rowche Rumble / Elastic Man... loads of songs - so in reality it I think it worked well for both mark and I.

As for MES filling tax forms out.. the mind boggles!

ta ta!

The Fall were always me fave band, but your Creepers band I saw at Klub Foot in hammersmith were the best gig ever.

New Face in Hell didn't sound too much like a MES song to me! Ye only confirmed it in your song.

It's great that you are playing the Fall songs as they are still annoyingly good.

"Bicycle Cambion Bug" is the only silly Fall song name left available - I checked in the Internet.

It will be about computers being crap and something about diseases that can only be
caught by people in Southern England. I'm
really looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Neil from the Keatons

Are there going to be any more extracts or is that it?

I have read on the fall site a contents page for the book that either is or isn't true. It contains a chapter called "Silencing The Riley".

Ha! Brilliant! Silence Of The Riley probably references Silence of the Lambs..coz we had a song in the film.

I doubt it'll be complimentary!

I wonder if I will be in the book, I once saw The Fall at a festival but wondered off because they were poor. I also have something to say about disliking when The Fall mangle, sorry, cover other people's songs. I doubt Smith will be complimentary about me.
