Famous for its beer and its football team, Dortmund is a high profile city in the north-west of Germany.

Have you visited this city before? Do you have any tips/advice on hidden gems in the back alleys of Dortmund? Would you recommend any particular restaurants? Exchange your memories or tips here...

The Signal Iduna Park, formerly the Westfalenstadion, is Germany's largest stadium. It will host the first semi-final and five games from the early stages - you won't miss a second of a game as there are 350 TVs placed throughout the stands!

Hi,

I am a citizen of Dortmund and would like to give you some recommendations on some good restaurants:

Barrock (in the Kreuzviertel not far from the stadium)
Swabedoo (also in the Kreuzviertel when you go from the stadium to the city centre)
Limericks Irish Pub (in the city centre), if you want to feel like at home

All these places have big screen TVs where you can watch the matches while enjoying your beer and food.

Enjoy your stay in Germany!

Hi all,

I was born in Dortmund and used to live there for 30 years. I totally agree with Penscanze and would also recommend the local pubs in the socalled "Kreuzviertel".

If you were not just interested in football but also in the arts, the theatre or even in walking, I could give you more advice. Please, ask a question.

See you (or in Dortmund slang: Tüss)

Knipperdolling

I was in Dortmund just over a month ago... I would recommend the stylish and very bohemian Sissi-King Kong bar out near the docks for a unique experience.

The Kreuzviertel's bars are okay but a bit wine-bar, pseudo arty-farty intellectual. Lots of people digging eachother and being dug.
There are some dingier places with a bit less style and more life. In the centre - 2 minutes from Platz von Leeds you'll find Platzhirsch at the end of Brückstraße. Metalheads may like to go round the corner to the Hells Angels' discotheque called 'Spirit' - open all night. A sunny afternoon stroll round the Westpark is recommendable and the pub in the park shows football outside. Nearby there's also the Dortmund-West station which is on the opposite corner of a great pub which shall remain nameless as it is nameless. There's a pool table and hippies.
Two good football pubs are B-Trieb on the Kreuzstr (outside the Kreuzstrasse U-Bahn) and in the Nordstadt many others

In about a couple of hours, about 350 Japanese supporters are arriving in Germany just to watch Japan vs. Brazil in Dortmund. They are only staying in Germany less than 9 hours not even staying overnight and fly back to Japan shortly after the match. Each supporter is paying approx. $2,200.00(US) for this trip. Hope Japan Team will do well against the Champions!

I see my post have been removed from your city guides threads. i see the error of my ways and now see the benfit of such an informative topic to cover. I would also like to congratulate the BBC for its obviouse benfits its changes have brought to these boards, well done. Just ignore all the sarcastic people who are slagging off these city guides topics and changes in general. You have done a great job and i hope you contiue to start such great threads in future. God Bless the BBC.

Spot on, ronyeats - my sentiments and experiences entirely! I think we should start an appreciation society for Chris Russell and his tireless army of under-paid over-achieving mods...............
