Munich's brand new Allianz Arena is one of five new stadiums built for the World Cup, and with a facade made up of nearly 3000 panels lit up at night in a variety of colours, one of the most spectacular.

The three-tiered ground, which is to the north of the city, will host the tournament's curtain-raiser - Germany v Costa Rica on 9 June.

Munich has been one of Europe's most important sports cities since the 1972 Olympic Games, and is a popular tourist destination - we'd love to get your inside info on the city; whatever your view, comment or question, please post it here.

This is a bright, clean place with its rebirth based on the high tech electronics and automobile businesses over the last 40 years. This is also a city with a grand history with beautiful churches and monasteries surviving to this day. Andechs and Weihenstephan are two of the more famous monasteries but they are also famous for fabulous beer. Beer is central to life in Munich, it is the social hub of life there.

Sit in a beer garden and enjoy a Weissbier with a wedge of lemon. First time round most Brits turn their noses but once tried, they are hooked. Munich is also great for food especially if you like it hearty after a hard days cheering for your team. Sausages in all shapes, sizes and colours, pork, venison and dumplings are specialities and taste wonderful when washed down with beer, what else.

To work up an appetite see the English Garden down by the river Isar and go rafting. If you like museums the Deutsche Museum is the place especially for those interested in history of technology - planes trains and automobiles. And finally you must experience the love affair with the automobile, BMW visitor centre is in the north of the city and the Audi one an hour away in Ingolstadt. ....and they like football in Munich too. Franz Beckenbauer ' The Kaiser' lives there.

I think this busy thread (!) should be removed to the Tourism MB?

It's rather seriously off-topic (and clearly not welcome) on 606..........................

Maybe you should be moved off the board instead.

As a student going to Munich in October for a year's study I found it very interesting and informative. Just cause you didnt doesnt mean no one else will.

Munchen is a fabulous place biggrin Having lived & worked there i can say that it is particulary wunderbar at this time of year with many a happy hour spent in the Englischer garden & eating out along the many & varied places in the centre of town. The U-Bahn is clean & ALWAYS runs on time. The best time of year in the city of Munchen is around September time with the fantastic Oktoberfest. The Christmas market is quite fun to. Top place in the heart of mainland Europe ok

Slack Babbath failed to mention the Munich beer gardens which are like an open-air mini Oktoberfest under the chestnut trees in summer. The best beer in Munich is Augustiner. Many locals agree that the 2 worst beers are Lowenbrau and Hofbrauhaus, but of course every tourist wants to visit that latter establishment. In summer you might prefer Weissbier, or wheat beer. The best of this sort is at the Weisses Brauhaus in the "Tal", right in the centre of town.
