It strikes me as ridiculous that Raymond Domenech should try to call up Makelele and get him suspended if he's retired from international football. Technically the law's on his side because Makelele is still a professional player but surely from the point of view of common sense this can't be allowed to happen?

This does seem ridiculous, I could be completely wrong but it sounds like Makelele and Chelsea are being blackmailed because of this law. He has announced his retirement from international football and is being forced to play or be banned, I'm amazed this is happening. What happened to his or his clubs (who pay his wages) rights.

I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in all my life. If Domenech has any semblance of intelligence he won't try and blackmail a player to play for him.

Surely Makele deserves a bit more respect for the service he has given his country over the years?!

This is quite strange and I'm struggling to understand it as I haven't heard of a similar situation in the past.

As far as I was aware, once a player announces his international retirment, that's the end of the matter, I didn't know that, legally, the player can still be called up to the national team.

Domenech is hardly being ethical 'forcing' Makelele to play if he has announced international retirement. Surely he should be lookig at players who will still be around for the Euro 2008 competition.

Surely they can not make Makelele play, mainly players retire to pro-long there own career by giving them less games or give the opportunity to younger players to come through for the next major tournament. You would expect that Makelele will not play again for France ever let alone in Euro 2008.

This is a slap in the face for a 33 year old who has given great service to his national team.

I can fully understand why a similar rule is invoked to discourage a player (usually on the insistence/advice of his club manager) from feigning an injury in order to avoid joining up for an international friendly but it should be the sole prerogative of the player himself as to when he decides to retire.

Can you imagine what would have happened if Eriksson had taken this stance with Paul Scholes, who retired from international football at a significantly younger age than Makelele is now? Fergie would have been hopping mad.

So I fully concur with the original poster - common sense should prevail in this matter.

Domenech is a disgrace:

"I spoke a lot with Claude and told him that he was not obliged to come and play with us, but also that it would be better if he did feel obliged to."

This can be paraphrased as: "Do what I tell you and you won't get banned".

If I were Makelele I'd agree to play and then go out and play the worst football of my life, just to tuck Domenech up. I guarantee he would respect Maka's retirement plans thereafter.

Absolutely Domenech (Paul O'Grady) is just threatening this and i doubt he will persue the ban. He has been make club enemies since he began, now he has with AW and Mourinho and the clubs will ultimately win. Take Clive Woodward from rugby as an example.

In all seriousness, is there any reason why he shouldn't go out and pop in two own goals before Domenech can sub him off? If they're calling each others' bluffs then I can't see how the manager can win.

"If you don't play I'll make them suspend you."
"Fair enough, but if I play then we'll be three-nil down after two minutes."
"Okay . . . never mind then."

Maybe, if the system allows us we could get McClaren to blackmail Manchester Utd and Paul Scholes to play for England again.

This is mad! As much as i hate chelsea and makelele, and would love to see him get banend for whatever reason, i'm right behind him on this one. What benefit can domenech possibly get from forcing a player to play for his country against his will. If i were makelele, i'd go out there and stand still in the centre circle until substituted. The fifa laws may be on domenech's side, but i can't imagine many people in france think this is a reasonable way to behave. I can understand international managers getting narky about players just withdrawing from friendlies cos they can't be bothered or because there's pressure from their club manager, but this is totally different. He's chosen to retire from international football, what right does domenech have to tell him otherwise.

Is there not also a possible civil legal issue of restraint of trade here and freedom to work? I normally hate the idea of players taking things to courts but this could be an exception.

You're right. He can't. Makele can just stand still with justification that he was bullied into playing. Domenechi needs a reminder about player power.

I think we'll find that this is made-up. There's no way that Domenech will attempt to force Makalele out of retirement like this.

Think this is usual tabloid trash.

It is not made up. When questioned on CTV last night Claude diplomatically answered, "When your country calls you you have to go".

Domenech is right. It's not the first time that Makelele has retired. He justs cherry picks the games he wants to play in.

I think this law was brought in to stop the "Fergie" statement as it is commonly known, when players are declared too badly injured to join up with their national squad, but were suddenly 100% fit for the next club match. Personally I don't like it as it adds a new twist to the club vs country row and the player power ideal. I'm surprised at Domenech as he knew Makalele was retiring, and has still put him in this situation. Hopefully this law gets rescinded as it will only cause trouble further down the line
