Hey Sport_Hosts,
It is obvious what is happening here, it's called "damage control". Zinedine Zidane's conduct in the world cup final may not only have cost HIM a bundle of money but also his AGENTS! Who knows if he is really sorry and what does it really matter? His lack of self-control possibly cost his country the world cup.

He and his handlers are now waking up to the extent of the public disgust at his behaviour and the millions of euros in endorsements that it will probably cost them.

If Zidane is really sorry then he should return his "player of the tournament" trophy!

I am not surprised at all by Zidanes interview. Whatever you think about him, he is a fundamentally nice guy. I was not expecting him to tell us what materazzi said to him because first it is probably too bad to be heard live on tv and second he is not the kind of guy that complains like a child to his mum.
Zidane apologised because he knows he was wrong, but he is a great man and does not want the situation to deteriorate further...

Again, merci Zizou, tu nous a fait rever

If Materazzi apologises, then every footballer has to apologise to every player he has a dig at. It's barmy! I think on a football pitch, you should be allowed to say anything you like to another player, it's called FREEDOM OF SPEECH! Violent abuse on the other hand has NO place on a football field!
If the ref catches what a player has said and deems it offensive, then fair enough, he should be punished by the ref, but dont give me this twaddle that players now have to apologise for some innocent jeering, just cos' one NUTTER can't take the pressure! MADNESS!
Zidane HAD to apologise because what he showed was pure violence and kids can see that, but NOBODY can EVER prove what Materazzi said, so we should not start to speculate.
Well Done Zidane for apologising, it was the least you could have done. Now Give that award back to a player who actually deserved it, Cannavaro.

No, the bigger man would have walked away. He SHOULD be stripped of his Golden Ball to really teach the kids that thuggery does not pay!

Truth is that had Voera's header stood against Korea and the Mexican referee hadnt messed up...France would have played Italy in the quarterfinal.

Spain,Brazil or Portugal would have made the final.

Zidane should keep his award. In 1998 Ronaldo got it although Zidane had some outstanding performances.

Zidane got his punishment. One feels that materazzi should have been punished in some way. Why is physical punishment more serious than verbal punishment. In Britain, verbal statements could result in a criminal verdict for less than that. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth. If Zidane's example was not good, should kids be allowed to act like materazzi? To win a game by provocation, to do something underhand? In some ways Zidane's reaction, albeit innaceptable, was less hypocritical that that of materazzi who then was all smiles when he lifted the cup??

You have the most pompous nickname in the world, Factsnotfiction, as if you think you are somehow above the rest of us. You don't have the right to tell ZZ what to do.

Someone in Scotland has bin making a movie on Zidane, they even used special microphones without Zidane's knowledge to tape him on the pitch.

I should have been more specific factsnotfiction i apologise. If Matterazi said what he apparantly said then he should say sorry, but however if Zidane has made up the stuff about the terroist and racist slurs, then thats Zidane being a prat

I also agree that materazzi should be punished. He is probably too stupid for that but I could not look myself in a mirror if I was him.

It would seem that the english have seemed to have lost the idea of family honour, which should come before queen and country as in Zidanes case. If it had been me I would have finsihed materazzi off when he was on the floor. To those of you who think he should have walked away, the difference between you and Zidane is Zidane has a spine, hounour and dignity and for that I applaud him!
